Key Takeaways

Serpent-Hunter is a unique great spear whose identity is tied to its confrontation with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. Its most important properties are encounter-specific rather than representative of a normal great spear.

01

A fixed-skill great spear built around one boss encounter

Serpent-Hunter is found in Rykard’s arena and has the unique Great-Serpent Hunt skill. Its special reach and attack behavior are most significant during the Rykard fight, where it is the intended weapon for damaging the boss.

02

It can be collected before defeating Rykard

The weapon is available from a corpse near the beginning of Rykard’s arena, so obtaining it does not require first winning the encounter. Entering the arena is still part of the acquisition route.

03

It has no conventional attribute requirement

Serpent-Hunter does not require the usual Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, or Arcane investment to wield. That makes its initial availability unusually broad, although its performance still depends on its upgrade state and encounter context.

04

Its boss-fight strength is not its general-purpose identity

Against Rykard, the weapon’s unique properties provide the reach and damage behavior needed to fight from a safer distance. Outside that encounter, it does not retain the same practical advantage, so it should not be treated as a universally superior great spear.

05

The weapon uses a fixed, non-infusible progression path

Serpent-Hunter is a unique weapon with a fixed skill rather than a normal Ash of War choice. It follows the Somber Smithing Stone upgrade path, so its progression differs from that of standard infusible great spears.

06

Its main alternative is a customizable great spear, not simply another high-damage weapon

Compared with standard great spears, Serpent-Hunter trades build flexibility and skill selection for its distinctive Rykard encounter mechanics. The relevant comparison is therefore fixed boss utility versus the broader affinity and Ash of War options of ordinary great spears.

Overview

Serpent Hunter is a unique great spear in Elden Ring, best known for its special interaction with the battle against Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. Its weapon skill and attacks take on their defining form in that encounter, while outside the arena it remains a usable but much more specialized great spear.

Serpent Hunter is a named, unique weapon associated with Volcano Manor and the confrontation with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. It is found as part of the approach to that encounter rather than obtained through a conventional shop, standard enemy drop, or ordinary weapon progression route. This gives it a clear place in the base game's progression: it is both a discoverable armament and the intended answer to a particular boss battle's unusual distance and spectacle.

Its defining feature is Great-Serpent Hunt, a fixed weapon skill that turns the spear into a long-reaching anti-serpent weapon for the Rykard encounter. Within that arena, the weapon's attacks produce the dramatic extended strikes associated with the fight and can interrupt the boss more effectively than ordinary close-range weapons. This special behaviour is the reason Serpent Hunter exists as more than a differently named great spear; its significance is tied to how the game frames and uses it during that battle.

Outside Rykard's arena, Serpent Hunter does not retain the same exceptional encounter-specific role. It can still be used as a great spear, but its value then depends on the wielder's preferred reach, moveset, and willingness to use a weapon with a fixed skill and limited customization. It therefore differs from more flexible great spears and from ordinary infusable weapons: its strongest identity comes from a scripted combat interaction, not from broad build adaptability.

The weapon belongs to Elden Ring's base-game arsenal and is not a Shadow of the Erdtree-only variant or an alternate mode version. Its page is useful because it needs two separate explanations: why it is central to the Rykard encounter, and what remains of its practical role after that encounter. Treating it only as a boss-specific tool misses its ordinary weapon behaviour; treating it as a normal great spear misses the mechanic that makes it distinctive.

Mechanics and Handling

Serpent-Hunter uses the Great Spear moveset, but its defining handling comes from its interaction with the Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy encounter. Outside that battle it behaves as a close-range thrusting weapon with a distinctive skill; inside the encounter, its attacks are augmented into the long-reaching serpent-hunting techniques intended for the fight.

Great Spear moveset and spacing

The ordinary moveset is built around committed thrusts rather than broad crowd-control swings. Light attacks keep the weapon pointed toward the target, while the heavy attack provides a stronger, more deliberate thrust. This makes spacing important: Serpent-Hunter rewards attacking from just outside an enemy’s immediate body range, but its forward commitment can leave the player exposed if a thrust misses.

Jumping attacks and other standard Great Spear actions retain the class’s emphasis on forward reach. They are useful for closing distance or pressuring an enemy’s stance, but Serpent-Hunter does not become a general-purpose sweeping weapon outside the Rykard encounter. Its handling is therefore more comfortable against targets that can be lined up than against groups surrounding the player.

Great-Serpent Hunt

Great-Serpent Hunt is Serpent-Hunter’s fixed weapon skill. It cannot be replaced with another Ash of War, so the weapon’s identity is tied to this attack rather than to affinity or skill customisation. The skill begins from a low, braced stance and follows with a forceful forward attack that projects the weapon’s serpent-hunting power. A follow-up input extends the sequence with a broad sweeping attack.

The skill is more than a simple damage button: the initial stance and forward commitment make timing important, while the follow-up is useful when the target remains in range after the first attack. Because the attack has a distinct wind and projectile-like presentation, it can connect at a noticeably greater practical distance than the physical blade alone suggests. The player should still treat it as a committed melee skill rather than a safe ranged spell; missing or using it during an enemy’s recovery window can leave Serpent-Hunter vulnerable.

Rykard encounter augmentation

In the arena for Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, Serpent-Hunter receives its signature encounter-specific augmentation. Its attacks produce a large spectral spear and wind effects, greatly extending the weapon’s effective reach and making the fight’s intended weapon immediately recognizable. This enhancement applies to the weapon’s attack patterns and Great-Serpent Hunt, turning ordinary thrusts into attacks capable of striking the enormous boss from a safer distance than normal melee weapons.

The augmentation is conditional on the encounter rather than a permanent property that should be assumed in ordinary areas. Outside Rykard’s arena, the weapon does not reproduce the full spectacle or practical reach of the boss-fight version. This distinction matters when judging the weapon for general exploration: its strongest and most unusual behavior is purpose-built for that battle.

Status, durability and customisation

Serpent-Hunter has no notable innate status buildup that defines its use, and its fixed skill means it is not a platform for experimenting with different Ashes of War. Its performance is instead governed by its Great Spear attacks, its unique skill, and the encounter-specific augmentation described above. No separate ammunition, charge resource, reload cycle or thrown-weapon recovery governs its attacks; Great-Serpent Hunt uses the game’s skill resource system.

The weapon’s most important handling limitation is commitment. Its thrusts and skill attacks are powerful-looking, but they still require the player to choose an opening and maintain useful spacing. Against Rykard, the special reach makes that trade favorable; in ordinary encounters, the player must rely on standard Great Spear spacing rather than expecting the boss-arena wind effects to solve every distance problem.

Upgrades and Variants

Strengths, Weaknesses and Best Uses

Strengths

  • Its Great-Serpent Hunt skill is specifically effective in the Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy encounter, where the weapon produces the long-reaching serpent-hunting attacks needed to engage the boss safely from outside ordinary melee range.
  • As a great spear, it offers a thrusting moveset with meaningful forward reach, allowing attacks to connect while the user maintains more distance than with many shorter melee classes.
  • It has no attribute requirements, so any character can equip it without diverting levels into Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith or Arcane.
  • Its fixed identity makes it immediately useful in its intended boss encounter: there is no need to find an affinity, Ash of War or build-specific weapon skill before using it.

Weaknesses

  • Its defining serpent-hunting behaviour is tied to the Rykard encounter; outside that fight, it functions much more like a conventional great spear and loses the special encounter advantage that distinguishes it.
  • The weapon has a fixed skill and cannot be treated as a general-purpose infusion platform, limiting affinity, Ash of War and scaling experimentation compared with customizable great spears.
  • Its thrust-focused moveset can be awkward against enemies that punish linear attacks, attack from several angles, or stay too close for the spear's spacing to matter.
  • Using it occupies a notable weapon slot for a weapon whose strongest purpose is a specific boss encounter, creating an opportunity cost for characters seeking a broadly customizable main weapon.

Best uses

  • Use it in the Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy fight, where its special skill and encounter-specific attacks are the central reason to bring it.
  • Use it as an accessible great spear for a character that has not invested in weapon attributes but wants reach and thrusting attacks.
  • Keep it as a dedicated encounter weapon rather than a general replacement for an upgraded, affinity-compatible great spear when planning a flexible PvE build.

Lore and Design

Serpent Hunter is closely associated with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, and the climactic encounter in Volcano Manor. Its item lore presents it as a weapon made for hunting great serpents and identifies it as an exceptional means of harming the enormous serpent encountered in that battle. This establishes a direct relationship between the weapon, serpent-hunting, and Rykard’s transformation without requiring a separate named wielder or documented order of hunters.

The weapon’s significance is reinforced by its placement in the arena before the battle begins. It functions as an encounter-specific tool that the player can claim immediately, making the fight’s setting and its lore point toward the same purpose. The description’s claim should be read as the weapon’s stated history, while any broader theory about who forged it, who previously used it, or how it relates to Volcano Manor’s wider practices remains unsupported here.

A weapon made for the great serpent

Serpent Hunter’s defining lore is its stated purpose: hunting great serpents. In Elden Ring’s narrative context, that description gains particular weight because Rykard has become one with the God-Devouring Serpent. The weapon therefore serves as both an ordinary armament and a story-signposted answer to the encounter’s central threat.

Its distinctive wind-like attacks and unusually strong performance against the arena’s serpent reinforce that narrative role through design, but they should not be treated as proof of an undocumented creator or historical faction. No reliable developer commentary is established here to support a real-world inspiration, specific cultural reference, or confirmed development history.

Trivia

  • Serpent Hunter has a context-sensitive interaction with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy: within that boss encounter, its attacks produce the extended spectral blade and ranged wind effect associated with hunting the great serpent. The same full enhancement is not present during ordinary encounters.
  • The weapon’s unusual Rykard behavior is tied to the encounter itself rather than a temporary player-applied buff. This makes Serpent Hunter a rare example of a weapon whose attack presentation and practical reach change for a specific boss fight.
