01

Key Takeaways

Vyke's War Spear is a unique great spear built around fire damage, innate Madness buildup, and a weapon skill that trades safety for aggressive area pressure. Its value depends heavily on whether the target can be affected by Madness.

01

A fixed-skill great spear

The spear uses the unique Frenzyflame Thrust skill and cannot be treated like an ordinary infusable great spear. Its affinity and skill are fixed, so Ashes of War customization is not part of its progression.

02

Madness is its defining status effect

Vyke's War Spear applies Madness buildup through its attacks, while Frenzyflame Thrust adds a close-range flame burst and can build Madness on the wielder as part of its risk profile.

03

Its requirements favor a hybrid build

The weapon requires 16 Strength, 20 Dexterity, and 18 Faith. Those requirements make it a natural consideration for characters combining physical weapon use with Faith investment.

04

It is an enemy drop in the Mountaintops

Festering Fingerprint Vyke drops the spear when defeated at Lord Contender's Evergaol in the Mountaintops of the Giants. The acquisition is tied to that encounter rather than a merchant inventory.

05

Its strongest identity is matchup-dependent

Madness is especially relevant against susceptible humanoid targets, but many enemies do not support the status. Against immune targets, the spear's physical and fire attacks remain relevant, while its signature status contributes less.

06

It follows the unique-weapon upgrade path

As a unique weapon, Vyke's War Spear is upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones rather than the standard reinforcement materials used by ordinary infusable weapons. Its fixed skill and status profile remain the key distinction from customizable great spears.

07

Compared with ordinary great spears

It offers a more specialized status-and-skill package than a conventional great spear, but gives up the freedom to select another Ash of War or affinity. That trade-off matters more than a simple raw-damage comparison.

02

Overview

Vyke's War Spear is a unique Great Spear in Elden Ring, distinguished by innate Madness buildup, fire damage, and a weapon skill that turns an aggressive plunge into an area burst of frenzied flame. It is a base-game weapon associated with the Frenzied Flame and with one of the Mountaintops of the Giants' optional encounters.

As a Great Spear, Vyke's War Spear occupies a reach-oriented melee role: it rewards spacing, committed thrusts, and attacks that can keep pressure on targets outside ordinary straight-sword range. Its identity is not simply that of a longer physical weapon, however. The spear combines physical and fire damage with an innate Madness effect, giving it a more specialized profile than conventional Great Spears and making its status theme part of its normal attacks rather than something added through an affinity or temporary buff.

Its defining skill, Frenzyflame Thrust, has the user leap and drive the spear into the ground, releasing a burst of frenzied flame around the impact. The skill is powerful but carries a built-in cost: the explosion also contributes Madness buildup to the wielder. That risk makes the weapon behave differently from a standard reach weapon with a low-risk ranged or area option. It asks the player to choose when the burst is worth the self-inflicted status pressure, especially during prolonged fights or when the attack is used at close range.

Vyke's War Spear is a fixed, unique weapon rather than a normal Great Spear intended for unrestricted Ash of War and affinity experimentation. Its special skill, innate status, and split damage define its role from the outset, so it is most naturally considered by characters willing to accommodate those mechanics rather than by players seeking a neutral spear for repeated respec or infusion testing. The Madness effect is also situational: it has particular relevance against susceptible humanoid opponents, while it is not a universal answer for the broader PvE roster.

The weapon becomes available through an optional invasion encounter in the Mountaintops of the Giants, placing it in the later part of a standard Elden Ring progression. It is not a Shadow of the Erdtree weapon and has no separate DLC variant in the scope of this overview. In practice, its appeal comes from the combination of long-reach Great Spear fundamentals, Frenzied Flame presentation, and a distinctive risk-reward skill—not from being a generic upgrade over every other spear in the class.

How to Obtain

Before you start
  • Access to the Mountaintops of the Giants, normally by defeating Morgott, the Omen King, obtaining the Rold Medallion, and using it at the Grand Lift of Rold.
  • No quest, vendor purchase, DLC, or special weapon-unlock condition is required.
  1. 01Travel to the Lord Contender's Evergaol in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Enter the Evergaol and defeat Festering Fingerprint Vyke, the hostile NPC boss inside; the victory awards Vyke's War Spear as a guaranteed drop.
  2. 02The Evergaol encounter is separate from the Festering Fingerprint Vyke invasion at the Church of Inhibition. Defeating the invader there does not provide this spear.
  3. 03After the reward is collected, the Evergaol encounter is completed for that playthrough and cannot be farmed repeatedly. The weapon can be obtained again in a later New Game Plus cycle.

Mechanics and Handling

Vyke's War Spear is a great spear whose handling is defined by two competing pressures: its long, committed thrusting attacks and the self-risk built into Frenzied Flame attacks. Its ordinary weapon strings let the wielder control a lane in front of them, while its unique skill rewards attacking groups or stationary targets but can also advance the wielder's own Madness buildup.

The spear's reach makes spacing especially important. Its attacks are strongest when the opponent must approach through the weapon's forward threat area, but the wielder has less freedom than with a shorter, faster weapon once an attack begins. The narrow profile of most thrusts also makes lateral positioning matter: a sidestep or roll can cause an attack to miss even when the target is close.

Great-spear attack pattern and spacing

Vyke's War Spear uses the great-spear family’s committed, forward-focused handling. Light attacks primarily present thrusting pressure, making the weapon suitable for punishing an enemy that is recovering, advancing in a straight line, or fighting at the edge of melee range. Its running and jumping attacks can preserve that forward pressure, but they are commitment tools rather than safe replacements for ordinary spacing.

Heavy attacks change the timing and angle of the exchange instead of simply repeating the light sequence. Use them when an opponent has committed to a recovery window or when a slower attack is more likely to catch a roll. The weapon is less forgiving when swung at empty space: missing leaves the wielder close to an enemy without the protection that a shield, faster recovery, or shorter weapon might provide.

Frenzied Flame and Madness buildup

The spear carries innate Madness buildup, so its attacks are not purely a physical-damage check against susceptible targets. Madness is a status effect with a limited target profile in Elden Ring; it is principally relevant against the Tarnished and other compatible humanoid enemies, rather than being a universal answer to every enemy or boss. Against targets that cannot meaningfully suffer Madness, the status component should not determine the weapon choice.

Madness buildup is also part of the weapon's handling risk. The wielder should not assume that the status is an entirely one-sided benefit, particularly when using the weapon skill. This makes the spear more demanding in prolonged fights: repeated use can create pressure on the user as well as on enemies, so the skill should be treated as a conditional offensive tool rather than a harmless damage button.

Frenzied Flame Thrust

Frenzied Flame Thrust is the spear's fixed weapon skill. The user launches upward and drives the spear into the ground, producing an area explosion of frenzied flame around the impact. This gives Vyke's War Spear a way to threaten clustered enemies and targets that are difficult to reach with a narrow forward thrust, while also adding fire-based skill damage to a weapon whose normal attacks are primarily close-range physical strikes.

The impact requires commitment and is most reliable when an enemy is recovering, cornered, grouped with others, or otherwise unlikely to move away before the plunge. It is a poor choice to use automatically at point-blank range against an alert enemy that can punish the animation. The explosion also carries the skill's distinctive self-Madness risk, so using it repeatedly without accounting for the wielder's status buildup can turn a successful attack into a dangerous trade.

Blocking, two-handing, and fight control

Vyke's War Spear can be used with a shield, but its value is not limited to a shield-poke plan. A shield can cover the recovery and approach risks created by a long, committed weapon, while two-handing places more emphasis on reach, attack timing, and the wielder's ability to avoid retaliation. The better choice depends on whether the fight rewards guarded advances or uninterrupted mobility; neither stance removes the need to manage the spear's attack commitment.

The weapon has no firearm-style reload, ammunition, or magazine loop, and its Frenzied Flame Thrust is a weapon skill rather than a consumable resource system. Its distinctive resource concern is the status interaction: skill use must be weighed against the wielder's Madness buildup, while ordinary attacks remain the more controlled option when the area explosion or its self-risk is unnecessary.

Strengths, Weaknesses and Best Uses

Strengths

  • Its great-spear reach and thrusting attacks let the user maintain spacing while continuing to threaten targets directly in front of them.
  • Innate Madness buildup gives its ordinary attacks a distinct pressure tool against susceptible humanoid targets, especially in PvP and other encounters where Madness can trigger.
  • Frenzied Flame Thrust combines a forward leap, an impact, and an area explosion, giving the weapon burst coverage that its normal thrusts lack. The skill can be charged for a stronger release.
  • The skill's fire damage and Madness pressure make it effective for punishing clustered or committed opponents when the user can safely land at close range.

Weaknesses

  • Madness is a restricted status effect: most non-humanoid PvE enemies and many bosses do not provide a practical target for its buildup, reducing the weapon's distinctive advantage in those matchups.
  • Frenzied Flame Thrust also builds Madness on its wielder. Repeated use can therefore create a real self-inflicted liability rather than functioning as a risk-free area attack.
  • The skill's leap and grounded explosion commit the user to a visible close-range action. Missing the landing or using it without an opening can leave the wielder exposed during and after the animation.
  • As a unique Somber weapon, Vyke's War Spear cannot be assigned a different Ash of War or affinity. Its fixed skill and innate damage/status profile limit customization compared with an infusible great spear.
  • The weapon's specialist status pressure does not replace ordinary damage and reach requirements; it is less compelling when the target resists Madness or when a build cannot comfortably meet its attribute demands.

Best uses

  • PvP and humanoid-target encounters where Madness buildup can influence exchanges and the weapon's reach keeps opponents at thrusting distance.
  • Punishing grouped or overcommitted enemies with a charged Frenzied Flame Thrust, provided the user has room to absorb the skill's self-buildup and complete its commitment.
  • A Faith-oriented great-spear setup that wants a fixed fire-and-Madness identity rather than interchangeable Ashes of War and affinities.
  • Open-area combat where the leap and explosion can be aimed reliably; tighter spaces and resistant bosses make its signature skill less dependable.

Lore and Design

Vyke’s War Spear is tied directly to Vyke, the Tarnished knight remembered as one of the Roundtable Hold’s strongest candidates for becoming Elden Lord. Its item lore presents his failure as a tragic turning point: although he reached the foot of the Erdtree, he did not claim the throne. Instead, he accepted the Flame of Frenzy and abandoned the path expected of him.

The spear therefore connects Vyke’s personal downfall with one of Elden Ring’s major forbidden powers. Its association with madness is explicit through the weapon’s lore and its relationship to Vyke’s later appearance as a servant of the Three Fingers. The weapon does not establish that Vyke became Elden Lord or that the Roundtable Hold endorsed his final allegiance; those are separate from the earlier recognition he received as a candidate.

Vyke’s fall from the Elden Lord path

Vyke’s story is distributed across the descriptions of his equipment and his encounters in the game. Together, these sources identify him as a knight of the Roundtable Hold who came unusually close to the Erdtree before being consumed by the Flame of Frenzy. The spear is significant because it preserves the contrast between his former status and his later corruption: it is the weapon of a celebrated candidate whose ambition ended in rejection of the ordinary Elden Lord route.

Relationship to the Flame of Frenzy

The weapon’s lore places Vyke among the figures connected to the Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame, while his appearances elsewhere show the consequences of that allegiance. This is a documented character relationship rather than evidence that every detail of his motives is known. The game leaves room for interpretation about whether Vyke acted from despair, sacrifice, or another purpose, so those readings should not be presented as settled canon.

Trivia

  • Vyke’s War Spear is notable for a self-inflicted status interaction: using its unique Frenzyflame Thrust can build Madness on the wielder as well as affecting enemies. This makes the skill’s area attack a risk-reward option rather than a purely offensive ability.
  • The weapon’s Frenzied Flame association is reflected mechanically as well as narratively: its unique skill is Frenzyflame Thrust, rather than a standard interchangeable Ash of War.
