Key Takeaways

Shamshir is a fast Curved Sword whose value comes from its forward-reaching slashes, flexible upgrade path, and accessible fixed pickup rather than a unique status effect.

01

A reach-focused curved sword

Its curved-sword moveset emphasizes quick sweeping attacks, while the Shamshir’s attack pattern and reach distinguish it from several closely related Curved Swords.

02

Found as a fixed Stormveil pickup

Shamshir is obtained from a corpse in Stormveil Castle. It is an exploration pickup, not a vendor item or a farmable enemy drop.

03

Flexible skill and affinity choice

The weapon uses the standard reinforcement path, can accept Ashes of War, and begins with Spinning Slash. Its skill and affinity can therefore be adapted to a build.

04

Strong for mobile melee pressure

Fast slashes and useful reach make Shamshir suited to players who want to maintain close-range pressure without committing to a heavier weapon class.

05

Limited to a slashing role

Its curved-sword attacks prioritize slashing rather than thrusting, so Shamshir does not replace a weapon chosen specifically for piercing attacks or heavier stagger.

06

A close alternative to Scimitar

Scimitar occupies the same broad weapon role, but Shamshir is the relevant alternative when its distinct light-attack pattern and reach better suit the player’s spacing preferences.

02

Overview

Shamshir is a standard curved sword in Elden Ring, built around mobile slashing attacks and flexible weapon customization rather than a unique legendary effect.

The Shamshir occupies the fast, close-range end of Elden Ring’s curved-sword roster. Its identity comes from a flowing slashing moveset that keeps attacks moving through the weapon’s arc, making spacing and continuous pressure more important than trading blows with heavier weapons. It is a regular weapon rather than a named unique armament, so its value depends on how its handling fits a character’s attributes, affinity, and chosen Ash of War.

Compared with more straightforward curved swords such as the Scimitar, the Shamshir is distinguished primarily by its attack animations and feel in motion. Its swings cover a broad lateral path while encouraging the wielder to stay mobile, which can make it comfortable for attacking around targets or maintaining pressure during openings. It remains a short-range melee weapon, however, and its light construction does not replace the reach, stagger commitment, or defensive qualities of heavier sword classes.

The weapon belongs to Elden Ring’s standard reinforcement system and can be developed as part of a customizable build rather than being locked to a single special skill or damage identity. That makes it relevant to characters that want a curved-sword moveset while retaining room to adjust affinity, attributes, or weapon skill later in progression. The practical choice is therefore less about a fixed signature effect and more about whether its movement and attack rhythm suit the player’s preferred spacing.

Shamshir is available in the base game and is obtained through exploration rather than requiring a major downloadable-content progression gate. It can serve as an early or mid-progression curved-sword option, but its usefulness is not limited to that point: regular upgrade access and customization allow it to remain a candidate when a build continues using fast slashing weapons. It should be evaluated against other curved swords by moveset, reach, requirements, and customization rather than by class label alone.

How to Obtain

Before you start
  • Access to Stormveil Castle in the base game; no specific boss defeat, quest completion, key item, DLC, or NG+ cycle is required.
  1. 01Travel to Stormveil Castle in Limgrave and reach the Rampart Tower Site of Grace. From there, follow the castle rampart route and drop into the nearby side room containing a corpse; loot the corpse to receive the Shamshir.
  2. 02This is a guaranteed fixed pickup rather than an enemy drop, vendor purchase, boss reward, or quest reward. The corpse can be looted once per playthrough, and the weapon is not tied to a limited-time event or a missable quest outcome.

Mechanics and Handling

Sweeping attack pattern

Shamshir uses the curved-sword moveset, with light attacks that cut in broad horizontal arcs rather than concentrating on a narrow thrust. This gives its normal sequence useful lateral coverage against nearby targets, while also making spacing important: the weapon is most comfortable when the wielder can remain just outside an enemy’s immediate range and let the arc meet the approach. Its attacks remain committed melee swings, so repeated mashing is less reliable against enemies that can interrupt or punish recovery.

Heavy attacks and movement

The heavy-attack sequence continues Shamshir’s slashing identity instead of changing to a thrust-focused pattern. Running, jumping and rolling attacks can therefore serve as approach tools, but they should be chosen for their timing and angle rather than treated as separate damage mechanics. Shamshir does not have a built-in projectile, charge resource, recall action or special durability state to manage.

Spinning Slash

Shamshir’s default skill is Spinning Slash. The initial activation performs a rotational cut around the wielder; following the skill input extends the action into a stronger additional spin. The rotation can catch enemies close to either side of the wielder and is useful when a target is committed to an attack or when several enemies are grouped within melee distance. It is still an area attack with recovery, so using it in the middle of an unbroken enemy chain can leave Shamshir’s user exposed. As an Ash of War-compatible curved sword, Shamshir can use a different compatible skill when the weapon is configured for one; doing so replaces Spinning Slash rather than adding a second weapon action.

Damage type and status handling

Shamshir’s ordinary attacks deal physical slash damage and the weapon has no innate status buildup. Bleed, frost or another status therefore requires an applicable affinity, temporary effect or external build interaction rather than coming from the unmodified weapon itself. The practical result is a weapon whose identity comes primarily from its sweeping curved-sword handling and skill flexibility, not from a permanent passive effect.

Upgrades and Variants

08

Strengths, Weaknesses and Best Uses

Strengths

  • The curved sword moveset delivers quick, sweeping slashes, letting Shamshir maintain pressure while still allowing the user to disengage more readily than with heavier melee classes.
  • Its blade has useful reach for a curved sword, helping its light attacks connect against targets that would be awkward for shorter sidearms.
  • As a standard, infusable weapon, it can be adapted with Ashes of War and affinities rather than being locked to one skill or damage setup.

Weaknesses

  • Its primary slash damage is less dependable against heavily armored or otherwise slash-resistant enemies, where a strike-oriented weapon can be a better matchup.
  • The attacks are comparatively light in poise impact, so repeated swings do not reliably interrupt larger enemies before they retaliate.
  • Its lower commitment is paired with lower per-hit impact than heavier swords, making spacing, sustained openings, or status and affinity choices more important than trading blows.

Best uses

  • Use Shamshir for agile PvE play against lightly armored enemies, especially when repeated curved-sword swings can exploit short openings.
  • It suits Dexterity-focused or otherwise affinity-customized characters that want a flexible sidearm with a changeable Ash of War.
  • It is a practical choice for players who prefer active spacing and rolling or running attacks over slow, poise-oriented exchanges.
