Grave Scythe

Grave Scythe is a rare large scythe dropped by scythe-wielding skeletons. It combines long slashing reach, innate blood loss, partial shield bypass, a vitality-raising passive, and ordinary affinity and Ash of War freedom.

Key Takeaways

Grave Scythe is a customizable reaper for players who want reach, physical damage, and innate blood-loss pressure without committing to a fixed special weapon.

01

Customizable reaper

It follows the standard reinforcement path and can accept Ashes of War and compatible affinities, giving it more build flexibility than fixed-skill scythes.

02

Innate blood loss

Its attacks carry built-in blood-loss buildup, so repeated hits can support status-focused setups without relying entirely on an external weapon buff.

03

Enemy-drop availability

Grave Scythe is obtained as a drop from skeletal enemies, making it farmable rather than a guaranteed chest, boss, or quest reward.

04

Meaningful stat demand

Its weight and attribute requirements are important constraints when comparing it with lighter reapers or lower-commitment melee options.

05

Reach with commitment

The reaper moveset provides useful spacing, but the weapon is less forgiving than a faster, lighter melee choice when attacks miss or fail to stagger an enemy.

06

Flexible alternative to Winged Scythe

Unlike Winged Scythe, Grave Scythe is not tied to that weapon’s fixed skill and sacred-damage identity; its customizable skill and affinity options suit a broader range of physical builds.

Overview

Grave Scythe is a standard Reaper-class weapon in Elden Ring. Its long, sweeping attacks and innate blood-loss buildup give it a distinct close-range role, while its compatibility with Ashes of War and affinities lets it support several physical or status-focused builds.

Unlike unique or Somber weapons, Grave Scythe follows the regular reinforcement path and can be customized rather than being locked to one weapon skill or affinity. That flexibility is central to its identity: the weapon provides a ready-made status effect and Reaper moveset, but its eventual role can be shaped around the wielder’s attributes and chosen Ash of War.

The weapon’s defining combat behaviour is its combination of reach, broad slashes, and deliberate commitment. Its attacks can cover space around the character more effectively than many compact melee weapons, but the larger swings require better spacing than a fast sword or dagger. The innate blood-loss buildup adds pressure during repeated hits without turning every encounter into the same status-focused strategy.

Grave Scythe is therefore a practical alternative to lighter Reapers and to ordinary swords that offer faster handling at shorter reach. Compared with a smaller weapon, it asks more from positioning and attack timing; in return, it offers a heavier-feeling moveset, useful area coverage, and access to the Reaper class’s distinctive attack patterns. These differences matter more to the weapon’s role than any single displayed attack value.

As a base-game Elden Ring weapon, Grave Scythe does not depend on Shadow of the Erdtree content. Its acquisition is tied to enemies that use the weapon rather than to a named legendary reward, so it fits naturally into progression for players willing to seek or repeatedly fight those foes. The weapon is best understood as a customizable standard Reaper: a good starting point for testing reach, sweeping attacks, and blood-loss-oriented melee without committing to a unique weapon’s fixed setup.

How to Obtain

Before you start
  • No quest, boss, vendor, key item, DLC, or story-progress prerequisite is required. The weapon is available in the base game and can be obtained again in NG+; it is not a one-per-playthrough or missable quest reward.
  1. 01Travel to the Church of Irith in western Liurnia of the Lakes. In the graveyard immediately around the church, defeat the skeletal enemies; Grave Scythe is an individual enemy drop, so each skeleton may fail to award it.
  2. 02Rest at the nearby Site of Grace and repeat the graveyard circuit until the weapon drops. The skeletons can be farmed repeatedly, but no single enemy kill guarantees the Grave Scythe and no verified fixed pickup is required.

Mechanics and Handling

Grave Scythe is a Reaper whose handling is defined by broad, committed slashes rather than a rapid series of short-range cuts. Its ordinary attacks sweep through an arc in front of the Tarnished, giving it useful coverage against groups and opponents approaching from slightly different angles. The same spread can make individual targets harder to track at very close range, so spacing and attack direction matter more than simply remaining beside an enemy.

Its attacks are not interchangeable with straight sword pokes: the sweeping motion can catch lateral movement, but the commitment leaves less room to react if a swing misses. Heavy attacks use slower, more deliberate cuts and should generally be started when an enemy is recovering, staggered, or approaching from a predictable line. Jumping attacks are likewise useful for closing distance or applying pressure, but they do not remove the weapon’s recovery commitment.

Innate Blood Loss and Spacing

Grave Scythe carries innate Blood Loss buildup. Each eligible hit contributes to the target’s buildup, and a successful hemorrhage is a separate status event rather than a simple increase to the weapon’s displayed physical attack. This makes repeated contact valuable, but the weapon does not apply the status immediately against every enemy; targets with resistance or frequent evasive movement give it fewer opportunities to connect.

The reaper’s reach and sweeping arcs support a measured mid-range approach: attack as an enemy enters the blade’s path, then reposition instead of trading through every recovery animation. Against a single agile target, aiming the arc and avoiding attacks that will only clip empty space is more important than relying on the weapon’s area coverage.

Spinning Slash and Ashes of War

Grave Scythe normally comes with Spinning Slash. The skill begins with a rotating cut and can be followed by an additional attack, extending the sequence and making it useful when several enemies are close together or when an opening allows a committed punish. It consumes FP, and its recovery means it should not be treated as a replacement for ordinary evasive timing.

The weapon can use Ashes of War and its skill can therefore be changed, subject to the weapon’s available affinity and skill restrictions. Replacing Spinning Slash changes the weapon’s active attack option; it does not remove the Reaper moveset or the Grave Scythe’s innate Blood Loss.

Upgrades and Variants

08

Strengths, Weaknesses and Best Uses

Strengths

  • Its reaper moveset gives the Grave Scythe useful lateral coverage and reach for controlling space around the player.
  • Innate Blood Loss buildup adds a status-pressure option without requiring an Ash of War or weapon buff to provide the weapon’s baseline bleed effect.
  • As a standard, infusable weapon, it can be adapted with different Ashes of War and affinities to suit a build rather than locking the player into one skill.

Weaknesses

  • Reaper attacks commit more heavily than the quicker swings of many curved swords and katanas, making missed spacing and delayed recovery more punishable.
  • Its bleed is a pressure tool rather than a guaranteed answer: enemies resistant or immune to Blood Loss reduce the value of that passive.
  • The Grave Scythe’s heavier handling and requirements can make it less convenient for light, fast setups that want minimal equipment burden.

Best uses

  • Use it for general PvE when reach, sweeping attacks and innate Blood Loss are more valuable than the fastest possible attack recovery.
  • It suits flexible builds that want to change affinities or weapon skills while retaining a reaper moveset and baseline status pressure.
  • It is most effective when the player maintains spacing and commits to openings rather than trading repeatedly with faster enemies.

Lore and Design

Grave-keeper symbolism

The Grave Scythe’s item description presents it as a weapon used by those charged with reaping the dead. That framing gives the weapon a clear funerary association: it is not introduced through a named hero, royal lineage, or celebrated battlefield event, but through the work of tending to the dead. The imagery supports the scythe’s role as a grim occupational tool within the setting without establishing a broader faction history.

Its lore is deliberately restrained. The description connects the weapon to grave keepers and the dead, but does not identify a specific character, region, or canonical real-world inspiration. The weapon’s visual and thematic resemblance to traditional harvesting scythes should therefore remain an observation rather than a claim about design intent.
