Gowry's Quest

Gowry's Quest is an optional Elden Ring quest in Caelid that begins at Gowry's Shack and leads through Commander O'Neil, Millicent, Sellia, and the Haligtree. Its key rewards include access to Gowry's sorceries and the Unalloyed Gold Needle storyline.

RoleOptional side quest connecting Gowry's research in Sellia to Millicent's search for a cure and the wider questline involving Malenia, Blade of Miquella.

The quest has no fixed level requirement or fixed completion time. Difficulty rises substantially when the route reaches the Haligtree.

Key takeaways

The quest's most important progression checks are conversations, area reloads, and the Haligtree summon-sign decision.

  • Start at Gowry's Shack Speak with Gowry in eastern Caelid to receive the request for the Unalloyed Gold Needle. The needle is obtained from Commander O'Neil in the Swamp of Aeonia, not from Sellia itself.
  • Treat Millicent at Church of the Plague Return the needle to Gowry so it can be repaired, then give the repaired item to Millicent at Church of the Plague. If she does not respond immediately, rest or reload the area and speak to her again.
  • Follow Millicent's relocations Millicent does not remain in one place after treatment. Speak to her at each new location, especially Gowry's Shack, Erdtree-Gazing Hill, Windmill Village, the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins, the Prayer Room, and the Haligtree.
  • Choose the Haligtree summon sign carefully The gold sign lets the Tarnished assist Millicent against invaders and leads to the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia. The red sign lets the Tarnished challenge Millicent and leads to Millicent's Prosthesis instead.
  • Delay Gowry's death until purchases are complete Gowry can provide sorceries and later drops a Bell Bearing and talisman when killed. Complete any shopping and dialogue you want before using the final quest state to remove him from the shack.

Gowry's Quest overview

Gowry's Quest starts as a short recovery task in Caelid but expands into one of Elden Ring's most important optional questlines. Gowry directs the Tarnished toward Millicent, and Millicent's journey eventually reaches the Haligtree and the aftermath of Malenia's rot.

The quest begins at Gowry's Shack, a small structure in eastern Caelid near Sellia, Town of Sorcery. Gowry asks the Tarnished to obtain the Unalloyed Gold Needle from Commander O'Neil, who is found in the rot-filled heart of the Swamp of Aeonia. The immediate objective is straightforward, but the route is dangerous because the swamp inflicts Scarlet Rot and Commander O'Neil is supported by summoned soldiers.

After the needle is returned, Gowry repairs it and sends the Tarnished to Church of the Plague, where Millicent is suffering from Scarlet Rot. Giving her the repaired needle advances both quests at once. Millicent then moves through several regions, and her conversations must be followed if the player wants to reach the Haligtree portion of the story rather than treating Gowry's request as a single Caelid errand.

The later stages involve helping Millicent in and around Sellia, meeting her at locations across the Altus Plateau, Dominula, the Mountaintops of the Giants, and Miquella's Haligtree, and making a decisive choice near the Haligtree. The two summon signs there represent opposing outcomes: assisting Millicent supports her against her invaders, while challenging her leads to a different talisman reward and closes off the other outcome.

Gowry remains relevant after the Haligtree decision. His presence at Gowry's Shack changes depending on the state of Millicent's quest, and he can ultimately be killed for Gowry's Bell Bearing and the Flock's Canvas Talisman. Because the final choice, Millicent's death, and Gowry's death affect available rewards, it is safer to finish all desired purchases and conversations before resolving the quest permanently.

The quest matters because it connects the isolated rot cult around Sellia with Millicent's identity, the Unalloyed Gold Needle, and the optional path to Malenia, Blade of Miquella. It is distinctive among side quests because its early task appears self-contained, while its real progression depends on speaking to the same character at multiple locations, reloading areas, and following Millicent's movement across the map.

WalkthroughSpoilers

  1. 01

    Accept Gowry's request.

Speak with Gowry at Gowry's Shack

Enter Gowry's Shack in eastern Caelid and speak with Gowry until his request is exhausted. He explains that the Unalloyed Gold Needle is in the Swamp of Aeonia and points the Tarnished toward Commander O'Neil.

    Location: Gowry's Shack, Caelid

TipUse the nearby Sites of Grace to make the shack a convenient return point before entering the swamp.

Watch outDo not assume that merely finding Gowry starts the entire Millicent sequence; his dialogue and the needle handoff are separate progression steps.

  2. 02

    Find Commander O'Neil.

    Enter the Swamp of Aeonia

Travel into the scarlet swamp and locate Commander O'Neil in the central area. The swamp rapidly builds Scarlet Rot while you move, so avoid unnecessary detours and keep a cure or sufficient healing available.

    Location: Swamp of Aeonia, Caelid

TipApproach on Torrent when possible and use solid ground or nearby terrain to create distance from the boss's summons.

Watch outDying to Scarlet Rot or the boss resets the attempt, but it does not remove quest progress already secured.

  3. 03

    Recover the Unalloyed Gold Needle.

    Defeat Commander O'Neil

Commander O'Neil fights with a large polearm and calls spectral soldiers during the encounter. Stay mobile around the swamp, punish his recovery windows, and avoid letting the summoned troops surround you while Scarlet Rot continues to build.

    Location: Swamp of Aeonia

TipRanged attacks, mounted attacks, or drawing the summoned soldiers away can make the open swamp easier to control than standing directly in the rot.

Watch outThe needle is not obtained until Commander O'Neil is defeated and the boss reward has been collected.

  4. 04

    Have Gowry repair the needle.

Return the Unalloyed Gold Needle to Gowry

Take the Unalloyed Gold Needle back to Gowry at his shack and exhaust his new dialogue. Gowry repairs the needle, after which the repaired quest item must be collected or obtained through the conversation before continuing.

    Location: Gowry's Shack

TipIf Gowry's dialogue appears unchanged, rest at a Site of Grace or reload the area and speak with him again.

Watch outGiving the unprepared needle to the wrong character is not the progression step; Millicent needs the repaired version at Church of the Plague.

  5. 05

    Treat Millicent's Scarlet Rot.

Find Millicent at Church of the Plague

Travel to Church of the Plague above Sellia and speak with Millicent. Use the repaired Unalloyed Gold Needle on her when the interaction becomes available, then continue her dialogue after the treatment.

Location: Church of the Plague, Caelid

TipClear or bypass the enemies around the church before beginning the conversation so the treatment is not interrupted.

Watch outMillicent's presence and dialogue can require an area reload; rest if the expected interaction does not appear.

  6. 06

Advance Millicent's recovery and leave Caelid's opening stage complete.

Speak with Millicent at Gowry's Shack

After the church treatment, return to Gowry's Shack and speak with Millicent when she appears there. Rest or reload the area if the shack still shows only Gowry, then exhaust both characters' available dialogue.

    Location: Gowry's Shack

TipThis visit is easy to miss because it is a relocation rather than a new map marker.

Watch outDo not move on while leaving new dialogue unused; later locations may not appear until the current conversation state is updated.

  7. 07

    Continue Millicent's journey.

    Meet Millicent at Erdtree-Gazing Hill

After the Caelid conversations, find Millicent near Erdtree-Gazing Hill in the Altus Plateau and speak with her. This confirms that she has begun travelling and moves the quest beyond Gowry's immediate request.

    Location: Erdtree-Gazing Hill, Altus Plateau

TipCheck the area after reaching the Altus Plateau rather than expecting Millicent to remain in Caelid.

Watch outIf Millicent is absent, revisit her earlier locations and exhaust dialogue before assuming the quest has failed.

  8. 08

Clear the village and speak with Millicent.

    Meet Millicent at Windmill Village

Proceed to Windmill Village and defeat the Godskin Apostle there if it is still active. After the village is safe, rest at the Site of Grace and speak with Millicent in the village area.

    Location: Windmill Village, Altus Plateau

TipThe boss arena and Millicent's later position are separate progression moments, so rest after the victory before searching again.

Watch outDefeating the local boss alone does not complete this step; Millicent's dialogue is still required.

  9. 09

Exhaust Millicent's dialogue in the Mountaintops.

Continue to the Mountaintops of the Giants

After the Altus Plateau stage, locate Millicent near the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins Site of Grace in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Speak with her there to keep the quest moving toward the Haligtree.

Location: Ancient Snow Valley Ruins, Mountaintops of the Giants

TipThe region is reached through the main late-game route, so this stage can naturally be completed while progressing toward the Consecrated Snowfield.

Watch outThis conversation is a progression gate for the later Haligtree appearances.

  10. 10

    Complete Millicent's final regular conversation.

Reach the Prayer Room in Miquella's Haligtree

Enter Miquella's Haligtree and find Millicent near the Prayer Room Site of Grace. Speak with her there before searching for the summon signs near the drainage area.

    Location: Prayer Room, Miquella's Haligtree

TipThe Haligtree's branching paths make it easy to pass the Prayer Room without locating the character; use the Site of Grace as the navigation anchor.

Watch outThe Haligtree is a difficult area, and dying is common; make sure the Prayer Room Site of Grace is activated before attempting the final route.

  11. 11

    Choose Millicent's outcome.

Find the summon signs near the drainage route

Travel from the Prayer Room toward the area near the Haligtree's drainage route, where a gold summon sign and a red summon sign offer opposing ways to resolve Millicent's conflict. Read the sign labels carefully before activating either one.

Location: Miquella's Haligtree, near the drainage route

TipIf both signs are available, decide based on the talisman you want because the rewards are mutually exclusive in that playthrough.

Watch outActivating one sign commits the quest to that branch and removes access to the other branch's reward.

  12. 12

    Support Millicent's defense.

    Assist Millicent against her invaders

Choose the gold summon sign to enter Millicent's world and help her defeat the invading sisters. Return to your world after the encounter, then find Millicent nearby and speak with her to receive the branch's reward.

    Location: Miquella's Haligtree

TipFocus on surviving the group encounter and use the arena's space to avoid being surrounded; Millicent provides support but should not be treated as invulnerable.

Watch outThis branch awards the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia and does not award Millicent's Prosthesis.

  13. 13

    Take the opposing branch.

    Challenge Millicent

Choose the red summon sign to invade Millicent's world and fight her instead of assisting her. This branch produces Millicent's Prosthesis and prevents the gold-sign outcome in the same playthrough.

Location: Miquella's Haligtree, near the drainage route

TipChoose this route only after deciding that Millicent's Prosthesis is more useful for the intended build than the alternative reward.

Watch outThe red sign is a permanent quest decision for the current playthrough; do not activate it while intending to claim the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.

  14. 14

    Recover the needle.

Collect the Unalloyed Gold Needle after the gold branch

If you assisted Millicent, return to the place where her quest ends after the encounter and interact with her remains to recover the Unalloyed Gold Needle. The item can later be used in the related Malenia aftermath.

Location: Miquella's Haligtree, at Millicent's final location

TipDo not leave the area without checking Millicent's final position, because the needle is a separate pickup from the talisman reward.

Watch outThis pickup is tied to the assist branch and is not available after choosing to challenge Millicent.

  15. 15

Choose whether to claim Gowry's final drops.

    Resolve Gowry's final state

Return to Gowry's Shack after Millicent's quest has reached its final state. Depending on the completed branch, Gowry may be vulnerable or may already be dead; killing him yields his Bell Bearing and the Flock's Canvas Talisman, while leaving him alive preserves his normal presence and shop.

    Location: Gowry's Shack

TipPurchase any desired sorceries before attacking Gowry, because his death changes how those services are accessed.

Watch outKilling Gowry is irreversible for the current playthrough and ends his normal dialogue.

Mission mechanics

Gowry's Quest uses character relocation as its main progression system. A conversation can be complete even when the next character is not immediately visible, so resting at a Site of Grace or reloading the area is a practical part of the walkthrough. The important checks are not just boss victories: the Tarnished must return the needle, allow Gowry to repair it, use it on Millicent, and exhaust dialogue at each later stop.

The opening combat task is shaped by the Swamp of Aeonia rather than by Commander O'Neil alone. Scarlet Rot limits how long the player can remain on the ground, while O'Neil's summoned soldiers create pressure from several directions. A player who treats the swamp as a normal arena is more likely to lose resources before the boss's health is depleted; mounted movement, ranged pressure, and deliberate retreats are safer than prolonged trading.

The Haligtree finale is a reward-selection mechanic rather than a conventional single boss fight. The gold and red signs are deliberately exclusive: the gold branch asks the player to help Millicent survive her invaders, while the red branch asks the player to fight Millicent directly. The choice determines whether the player receives the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia or Millicent's Prosthesis, so the branch should be selected around the build's needs before interacting with a sign.

Gowry's role changes after the quest's final state. While alive, he functions as a source of sorceries and quest dialogue; when killed, his Bell Bearing allows his shop inventory to be transferred to the Twin Maiden Husks, and his body provides the Flock's Canvas Talisman. This makes his death useful for collecting items but undesirable if the player still wants his direct dialogue or has not finished shopping.

What works and what does not

Strengths

  • The quest begins in Caelid without a mandatory main-story prerequisite, making its opening accessible during optional exploration.
  • The gold-sign branch provides the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, which rewards repeated attacks and suits aggressive weapons, fast attacks, and multi-hit status or elemental setups.
  • The red-sign branch provides Millicent's Prosthesis, combining an attack boost with Dexterity and fitting Dexterity-focused builds that want stronger repeated attacks.
  • The quest opens the route to the Unalloyed Gold Needle's later use and connects naturally with the optional Malenia content.
  • Gowry's Bell Bearing preserves access to his shop inventory through the Twin Maiden Husks after his death.

Weaknesses

  • The quest does not provide a reliable in-game checklist for Millicent's relocations, so it is easy to miss the shack, plateau, Mountaintops, or Haligtree conversations.
  • The Swamp of Aeonia adds Scarlet Rot pressure to the Commander O'Neil fight, making the opening combat more resource-intensive than the boss's location might suggest.
  • The Haligtree branch is mutually exclusive: choosing the red sign means losing the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, while choosing the gold sign means losing Millicent's Prosthesis.
  • Late stages require access to difficult regions, so the quest cannot be completed as a quick Caelid errand.
  • Killing Gowry before completing desired dialogue or purchases removes his normal role at the shack.

Best uses

  • Choose the gold branch for an aggressive build that can maintain repeated hits and wants the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.
  • Choose the red branch when Millicent's Prosthesis and its Dexterity benefit better match the planned build.
  • Keep Gowry alive until all desired sorceries and conversations are complete, then kill him if the Bell Bearing and Flock's Canvas Talisman are wanted.

Commander O'Neil encounter phases

  1. 1

    Opening engagement

Starts: Entering Commander O'Neil's arena in the Swamp of Aeonia.

Commander O'Neil uses a large polearm while Scarlet Rot remains an environmental threat. The open swamp gives room for mounted movement, but standing in the rot for too long can end the attempt even when the boss is nearly defeated.

    • Polearm swingsTell O'Neil closes distance and winds up broad melee attacks.Answer Circle out of range, punish the recovery, and avoid trading while trapped in the swamp.
    • Rot-filled arena pressureTell The surrounding swamp steadily builds Scarlet Rot while the player remains in contaminated ground.Answer Use Torrent and patches of safer terrain to reduce exposure, and cure buildup before it becomes fatal.
    • Keep the boss and his summons in view rather than retreating blindly through the swamp.
    • Ranged attacks or mounted hit-and-run attacks reduce the need to stand in Scarlet Rot.
  2. 2

    Summoned soldiers

Starts: During the fight, when Commander O'Neil calls additional spectral soldiers.

The encounter becomes a crowd-control problem as summoned soldiers attack from multiple angles. The soldiers can distract the player from O'Neil's polearm and make healing dangerous.

    • Spectral soldier assaultTell Additional soldiers appear and advance while O'Neil remains active.Answer Create distance, remove the most disruptive summons when safe, and return to O'Neil during a clear opening.
    • Overlapping pressureTell O'Neil's melee range and the soldiers' attacks overlap when the player is cornered.Answer Stay mobile around the arena and do not allow the boss and summons to pin you against contaminated terrain.
    • A spirit summon or ranged damage can divide the encounter's attention, but the player must still monitor Scarlet Rot.
    • Do not spend all healing while clearing summons; the boss remains active until the encounter ends.

Boss encounter

  • Location
    Swamp of Aeonia, Caelid
  • Health
Not specified; varies by game conditions and difficulty settings.

Avoid treating the swamp as safe ground. Use Torrent to move around Commander O'Neil, attack during the recovery after his polearm swings, and control or distract the spectral soldiers when they appear. If Scarlet Rot buildup becomes dangerous, retreat to safer ground and cure it instead of forcing another attack cycle. Spirit Ashes can help divide attention, but the fight still requires awareness of O'Neil's position and the contamination beneath the player.

Weaknesses

  • Sustained ranged pressure and mounted hit-and-run attacks are effective because the arena is open.
  • The boss's recovery windows after polearm attacks provide opportunities for melee punishment.

Rewards

  • Unalloyed Gold Needle
  • Commander O'Neil's Remembrance

Choices and consequencesSpoilers

  • Use the gold summon sign near the Haligtree drainage route.

Assist Millicent against her invading sisters. Afterward, Millicent's branch awards the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, and the Unalloyed Gold Needle can be recovered from her final location.

    Spoiler
  • Use the red summon sign near the Haligtree drainage route.

Challenge Millicent directly. This branch awards Millicent's Prosthesis instead and prevents the gold-branch talisman and needle recovery in the same playthrough.

    Spoiler
  • Kill Gowry after the quest reaches its final state.

Gowry's Bell Bearing and the Flock's Canvas Talisman become available, but Gowry's normal presence and direct shop access end. His inventory can be accessed through the Twin Maiden Husks after turning in the Bell Bearing.

    Spoiler
  • Leave Gowry alive.

Gowry remains available for dialogue and sorcery purchases, but the drops tied to killing him are not collected.

ChecklistSpoilers

  • Speak with Gowry at Gowry's Shack.Exhaust his opening request dialogue.
  • Defeat Commander O'Neil in the Swamp of Aeonia.Collect the Unalloyed Gold Needle.
  • Return the needle to Gowry.Allow him to repair it.
  • Give the repaired needle to Millicent at Church of the Plague.Rest or reload if the interaction is not immediately available.
  • Speak with Millicent at Gowry's Shack.Do not skip this relocation.
  • Speak with Millicent at Erdtree-Gazing Hill. This is the first major Altus Plateau checkpoint.
  • Defeat the Godskin Apostle at Windmill Village.Rest afterward and speak with Millicent in the village.
  • Speak with Millicent at the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins. This advances the Mountaintops stage.
  • Speak with Millicent near the Prayer Room.Complete the Haligtree conversation before seeking the signs.

Failure conditionsSpoilers

  • Choose the wrong Haligtree summon sign for the desired rewardThe gold and red signs are mutually exclusive. Assisting Millicent leads to the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, while challenging her leads to Millicent's Prosthesis.
  • Fail to reload or rest after a progression conversationMillicent and Gowry may not visibly relocate until the area state updates. Revisit the previous location and rest at a Site of Grace before concluding that the quest is broken.
  • Kill Gowry before completing his shop and dialogueHis direct shop and normal conversations end when he dies. Purchase desired sorceries first, then kill him only if his Bell Bearing and talisman are wanted.
  • Leave Millicent's final location without collecting the needleThe Unalloyed Gold Needle is a separate pickup after the gold branch. It is required for the later Malenia-related use of the item.
  • Enter the Haligtree finale without following the earlier Millicent conversationsThe final signs may not appear unless the Caelid, Altus Plateau, Windmill Village, Mountaintops, and Prayer Room stages have been advanced.

On failure

Most combat failures return the player to a Site of Grace and do not erase completed quest steps. Quest-state failures are mainly caused by skipping conversations, selecting the mutually exclusive summon branch, or killing Gowry before desired services are complete.

RewardsSpoilers

  • Unalloyed Gold Needle
Taken from Commander O'Neil, repaired by Gowry, and later recoverable after assisting Millicent. It is used in the wider Malenia-related storyline.
  • Gowry's sorceries
Gowry sells sorceries while he remains available at Gowry's Shack. Buy desired spells before killing him.
  • Rotten Winged Sword Insignia
The gold-branch talisman increases attack power with successive attacks and is suited to repeated-hit builds.
  • Millicent's Prosthesis
The red-branch talisman raises Dexterity and increases attack power with successive attacks. It cannot be obtained alongside the gold-branch reward in the same playthrough.
  • Flock's Canvas Talisman
Dropped by Gowry when he is killed in the relevant aftermath state; it strengthens incantations.
  • Gowry's Bell Bearing
Dropped by Gowry when killed and transferable to the Twin Maiden Husks to preserve access to his shop inventory.
  • Commander O'Neil's Remembrance
Obtained from Commander O'Neil's defeat as a separate boss reward; it is not the same item as the Unalloyed Gold Needle.

Characters in this mission

AftermathSpoilers

Plan the final reward before choosing a summon sign

The Haligtree gold and red summon signs are not two steps of the same route. Gold gives the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia and preserves the needle pickup, while red gives Millicent's Prosthesis. Finish Gowry's purchases before resolving his fate, because killing him ends his direct shop and dialogue.

Trivia

  • Gowry's Quest is structurally inseparable from Millicent's Quest: Gowry provides the opening objective, while Millicent's movements supply the later progression checkpoints.
  • The Unalloyed Gold Needle serves more than one purpose in the wider questline. It is first a treatment item for Millicent and later remains relevant after the Haligtree branch.
  • Gowry's Bell Bearing prevents his shop inventory from becoming inaccessible solely because the player chose to kill him, although it does not preserve his direct conversations.
