Longsword

Longsword is a dependable straight sword in Elden Ring, built around a balanced moveset, shield-compatible handling, and the adaptable Square Off weapon skill.

Longsword is a standard straight sword rather than a unique, legendary, or DLC-exclusive weapon. Its role is straightforward: it gives a character a reliable close-range option with quick ordinary attacks, a useful heavy attack, and enough flexibility to remain relevant as the character’s equipment changes.

The weapon’s defining feature is its combination of conventional straight-sword attacks and Square Off. That skill lets the wielder shift from a guarded stance into a distinct follow-up, giving the weapon a more deliberate answer to openings than its ordinary attack chain alone. Its skill can also be changed when the weapon is used with a compatible Ash of War.

Longsword works naturally in a one-handed setup with a shield, but it can also be used two-handed when the player wants the weapon itself to occupy both hands. This makes it a practical baseline for learning spacing, attack commitment, guard timing, and the difference between ordinary attacks and weapon skills without requiring a specialised build.

Its main point of comparison is other straight swords: Longsword is the balanced reference point, while alternatives may trade handling flexibility for a different reach profile, damage emphasis, passive effect, or fixed skill. It is therefore most useful as an adaptable general-purpose weapon, not as a substitute for a specialised status, heavy-weapon, or unique-skill choice. The same identity applies in the base game and when used in Shadow of the Erdtree; no separate DLC variant is implied here.

1. 01Choose the Vagabond starting class at character creation to receive the Longsword immediately as starting equipment. This route requires no region, quest, boss, DLC, or New Game Plus progression.
2. 02After unlocking Roundtable Hold, visit the Twin Maiden Husks and purchase the Longsword from their weapon inventory. The vendor route is a guaranteed purchase rather than a random enemy drop or quest reward.

The Longsword uses the responsive, relatively compact moveset associated with Elden Ring’s straight swords. Its ordinary attacks come out quickly and chain into short slash sequences, while its heavy attack provides a thrust that gives the weapon a more direct answer when an enemy is lined up in front of you. This combination makes spacing important: the slashes cover nearby targets, but the thrust is more dependent on facing and positioning.

Its light attacks are useful for confirming hits and continuing pressure, while the heavy and jumping attacks offer more commitment in exchange for stronger impact or improved reach along the weapon’s forward line. The Longsword does not have an innate bleed, poison, frost or other status passive, so status buildup comes from an applied affinity, Ash of War, or external effect rather than from the weapon’s unmodified identity. It can be wielded in either hand, and dual-wielding it with another compatible straight sword changes the attack pattern to powerstanced attacks rather than simply repeating the one-handed sequence.
