Ranni's Quest overviewSpoilers

Ranni's Quest is one of Elden Ring's longest optional questlines, connecting the Three Sisters, Nokron, Nokstella, the Lake of Rot and the Moonlight Altar. Its main rewards are the Dark Moon Greatsword and the ability to select the Age of Stars ending after the final boss.

The quest begins at Ranni's Rise in the Three Sisters, the area behind Caria Manor. After defeating Royal Knight Loretta and entering the manor's surrounding towers, the Tarnished can swear service to Ranni and meet the three figures working with her: Blaidd, War Counselor Iji and Preceptor Seluvis. These conversations establish the search for Nokron, Eternal City, but the route does not remain at the tower; the next major advance depends on the Starscourge Radahn festival in Caelid.

The first major objective is to help Blaidd and Ranni locate the hidden treasure of Nokron. Progress requires learning why the entrance to Nokron is sealed, defeating Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle, and entering the crater created in Limgrave when the stars resume moving. The Fingerslayer Blade in Nokron's Night's Sacred Ground is the key item Ranni wants, so exploration in this section is focused on reaching the correct underground district rather than searching every part of the Eternal City.

After Ranni receives the Fingerslayer Blade, the quest moves through a second chain of locations and a change in Ranni's position. The Carian Inverted Statue opens the route through Carian Study Hall and the Divine Tower of Liurnia, while a miniature version of Ranni guides the Tarnished through Ainsel River Main and Nokstella.    Identify the Radahn barrier

   Investigate Nokron with Blaidd

   Meet Blaidd in the Siofra River area and speak with him about the search for Nokron. He directs the Tarnished toward further information, while Seluvis and Sorceress Sellen provide the context that the path is blocked until Starscourge Radahn is dealt with.

   Location: Siofra River and Seluvis's Rise

   TipThe optional Seluvis potion thread is separate from the required route to Nokron, so do not hand over the potion merely because Seluvis asks for it.

   Watch outGiving Seluvis's potion to another character can change that character's related quest outcome. Decide whether you want to preserve alternative outcomes before delivering it.

   Prepare for the Radahn festival

   Learn how to reach Nokron

   Speak with Sorceress Sellen about Radahn after the relevant dialogue has been found. Her information explains that Starscourge Radahn's control over the stars prevents the route to Nokron from opening.

   TipIf Blaidd is not at the location you expect, inspect Redmane Castle and the festival's available dialogue rather than abandoning Ranni's Quest.

   Watch outThe precise NPC positions can change when the Radahn festival is active, so use the festival entrance and available dialogue to progress instead of searching only the earlier Siofra location.

5. 05

   Release the stars

   Defeat Starscourge Radahn

   Travel to Redmane Castle and defeat Starscourge Radahn. The battle allows summoned allies and takes place across a wide field, so use the available summon signs to divide pressure and keep moving when Radahn's ranged attacks target the Tarnished.

   TipThe battlefield's size is an advantage: reposition rather than trading every attack at close range, and reactivate fallen ally summon signs when the fight allows it.

   Watch outDo not leave the boss alive while expecting the Nokron crater to appear; the falling-star event occurs after Radahn's defeat.

   Enter Nokron, Eternal City

   Enter the crater in Limgrave

   After Radahn falls, a star crashes into Limgrave and creates a large crater south of the Mistwood. Approach the crater, descend through the broken terrain and follow the ledges into Nokron, Eternal City.

   Location: Limgrave crater south of the Mistwood

   TipThe descent is a platforming route rather than a normal doorway. Look for stable ledges and bodies of fallen architecture before dropping.

   Watch outThe crater route is easy to misread as a lethal fall. Do not jump directly toward the bottom; use the visible ruins to descend in stages.

7. 07

   Recover the Fingerslayer Blade

   Reach Night's Sacred Ground

   Explore Nokron until the route leads across rooftops and into the lower district called Night's Sacred Ground. The Fingerslayer Blade is inside a chest at the end of this route, beyond the rooftops and buildings rather than in the first open section of Nokron.

   Location: Nokron, Eternal City and Night's Sacred Ground

   TipUse the rooftops to approach guarded platforms from above and search the large structure at the end of the route for the chest.

   Watch outThe quest item is not obtained by defeating a named boss in Nokron. If the quest is not advancing, verify the chest in Night's Sacred Ground rather than continuing to search the Mimic Tear arena.

8. 08

   Give Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade

   Return the Fingerslayer Blade to Ranni

   Take the Fingerslayer Blade back to Ranni's Rise and give it to Ranni. She rewards the exchange with the Carian Inverted Statue, which is used at Carian Study Hall to change the building's layout and open the route toward the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

   Location: Ranni's Rise

   TipKeep the Carian Inverted Statue in your inventory until you are ready to use it at the pedestal in Carian Study Hall.

   Watch outThis hand-in is the transition point to the next section. If Ranni is absent, check Renna's Rise and the tower's upper areas after returning from Nokron.

   Reach the Divine Tower of Liurnia

   Use the Carian Inverted Statue

   Travel to Carian Study Hall and place the Carian Inverted Statue on the study hall's pedestal. The entire interior is inverted, allowing access to a new traversal route and ultimately the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

   Location: Carian Study Hall

   TipAfter inversion, treat ceilings and hanging surfaces as the new floor plan; move slowly around the altered ledges and lift route.

   Watch outThe statue is not consumed by ordinary exploration elsewhere. If the study hall remains unchanged, interact with the pedestal rather than searching for a separate entrance.

    Collect the Cursemark of Death

    Obtain the Cursemark of Death

    Cross the inverted Carian Study Hall and continue to the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Search the upper section for the corpse holding the Cursemark of Death, an item that also connects to Fia's related storyline.

    TipThis item is not required to reach Ranni's final reward, but collecting it preserves the connected route into the deeper lore and related quest content.

    Watch outThe tower route is optional-looking because it branches from the main progression, so do not leave before checking the upper area for the corpse and item.

    Follow Ranni underground

    Enter the portal at Renna's Rise

    After Ranni's departure, travel to Renna's Rise, the northern tower in the Three Sisters. Use the portal at the top to reach Ainsel River Main and collect the miniature Ranni nearby.

    TipRenna's Rise may not have been usable earlier; return after giving Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade and inspect the tower again.

    Watch outThe miniature Ranni is not activated simply by picking it up. Carry it to the nearby Site of Grace and begin the required dialogue there.

    Locate the Baleful Shadow

    Speak to the miniature Ranni

    Rest at the Site of Grace in Ainsel River Main and choose to speak to the miniature Ranni. Repeat the conversation until she answers and gives the next instruction, then proceed through the river route toward Nokstella.

    TipThe dialogue option can appear to do nothing at first; select it repeatedly until the miniature responds rather than resting once and leaving.

    Watch outSkipping this dialogue prevents the Baleful Shadow from appearing as the quest encounter, so do not rush past the first underground Site of Grace.

    Defeat the Baleful Shadow and obtain the key

    Defeat the Baleful Shadow

    Follow the Ainsel River and Nokstella route until the red phantom-like Baleful Shadow appears. Defeat it to receive the Discarded Palace Key, which opens the later chest containing the Dark Moon Ring.

    TipThe encounter is against a single named invader-style enemy, so maintain spacing and punish the end of its attack strings instead of chasing every retreat.

    Watch outThe Discarded Palace Key is a progression item for the ring chest. Do not discard it or leave the area assuming the reward is only currency.

    Obtain the Dark Moon Ring

    Open the chest in Raya Lucaria Grand Library

    Travel to Raya Lucaria Grand Library and use the Discarded Palace Key on the locked chest near the room's central area. Take the Dark Moon Ring before continuing toward the Lake of Rot.

    TipThe chest is in the same room as the Grand Library Site of Grace, so it is safer to collect the ring before returning to the underground route.

    Watch outThe Dark Moon Ring is required for the final interaction with Ranni. If the seal at the end of the underground route will not open, check this chest first.

    Reach the coffin to Astel's arena

    Cross the Lake of Rot

    Continue from Nokstella into the Lake of Rot and cross the hazardous red lake toward the Grand Cloister. Use available platforms, healing and resistance tools to limit time spent in the lake, then find the coffin at the far end of the route.

    TipThe lake is not a normal open-field fight; prioritize route finding and safe footing over clearing every enemy, because the environmental hazard continues while combat is happening.

    Watch outStanding in the lake for too long can consume healing and leave the Tarnished vulnerable before the next boss. Restock and prepare before committing to the crossing.

    Open the route to the Moonlight Altar

    Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void

    Enter the coffin at the Grand Cloister to reach Astel's arena and defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. The boss uses long-range gravitational attacks, sweeping strikes and a dangerous grab, so punish brief openings after its attacks rather than remaining directly beneath it.

    After defeating Astel, use the newly available route to reach the Moonlight Altar. Travel to the Cathedral of Manus Celes and descend through the opening beneath it to find Ranni's hidden chamber.

    TipThe Moonlight Altar is a large exterior region, so use the cathedral as the main landmark rather than searching randomly along the plateau's edges.

Ranni's Quest is structured around progression flags rather than a single uninterrupted mission zone. Conversations at Ranni's Rise establish the objective, but the active gate is Starscourge Radahn. Once Radahn is defeated, the game changes the world state by placing a meteor crater in Limgrave; that crater is the physical entrance to Nokron, Eternal City.

The quest's item handoffs are unusually important. The Fingerslayer Blade advances Ranni's story and produces the Carian Inverted Statue, while the statue changes Carian Study Hall and exposes the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Later, the miniature Ranni's dialogue activates the Baleful Shadow, whose Discarded Palace Key opens the Dark Moon Ring chest in Raya Lucaria Grand Library.

The underground route is not a single dungeon. Nokron is the treasure-search section, Ainsel River Main is the miniature Ranni and Baleful Shadow section, Nokstella provides the route toward the Lake of Rot, and the Grand Cloister supplies the coffin that leads to Astel. Treating these as separate checkpoints makes it easier to identify which item or dialogue is missing.

The ending reward has a separate activation step. Completing Ranni's personal sequence makes the Age of Stars route available, but the Tarnished still chooses whether to use Ranni's blue summon sign after the Elden Beast. The quest therefore changes the set of available endings without forcing the player to use one of them.

   The Baleful Shadow is a single aggressive humanoid encounter on the route through Nokstella. Its defeat is less about collecting a boss reward than about obtaining the Discarded Palace Key that advances the quest.

   Starts: Enter the coffin at the Grand Cloister after crossing the Lake of Rot.

   Astel is a large cosmic boss fought in a wide arena. The creature combines ranged gravitational effects with sweeping physical attacks and a teleporting grab, rewarding attacks during recovery windows rather than constant pursuit.
