Key takeawaysSpoilers
The quest is easy to lose track of because Alexander travels across several regions and some encounters are tied to major boss arenas.
- Start near Saintsbridge Find Alexander trapped in a hole north of Limgrave's Saintsbridge and strike his back until he pops free. Do not treat the encounter as a normal enemy fight. Saintsbridge
- Exhaust his dialogue At each location, speak to Alexander repeatedly until his current conversation ends. Leaving before completing the dialogue can make the next stage difficult to identify. Dialogue

Iron Fist Alexander's Quest overviewSpoilers
Iron Fist Alexander's Quest is a long-running optional character storyline in Elden Ring. The player repeatedly finds Alexander in difficult situations, helps him continue his journey as a warrior, and eventually fights him in an honorable duel.
The quest begins in Limgrave, where Iron Fist Alexander is wedged inside a hole near Saintsbridge. He calls for help from below the ground and cannot free himself without outside force. Strike the rear of his jar body rather than attacking him from the front; the aim is to dislodge him, not to defeat him. Once released, he explains his ambition to become a stronger warrior and moves on.
Alexander's route then intersects with the game's major battlefields. He can be encountered in Gael Tunnel, at the Radahn Festival in Redmane Castle, and later in Liurnia of the Lakes. These meetings are not all strictly linear in the same way as a conventional mission: exploring ahead, defeating Starscourge Radahn, or changing the state of the festival can alter where Alexander appears next. Speaking to him until his dialogue is exhausted is important at every stop.
The middle stages take Alexander to Mt. Gelmir and then to the war against the Fire Giant. At Mt. Gelmir he sits in a pool of lava, and ordinary attacks do not solve the problem because the heat prevents him from leaving. The player must first prepare a way to soften the hardened material around him, then speak with him while enduring the area. Alexander can also be summoned for the Starscourge Radahn and Fire Giant battles, but those summons are useful interactions rather than the sole requirement for completing his storyline.
The quest concludes in Crumbling Farum Azula. Alexander asks for a final battle to test how far he has come, and accepting the duel makes him hostile in a controlled one-on-one encounter. Defeating him grants the Shard of Alexander, a talisman that substantially improves skill damage. Killing Alexander before this conclusion can provide the weaker Warrior Jar Shard, but it permanently prevents the final quest reward on that playthrough.

Requirements
The quest has no mandatory starting item or character prerequisite, although regional progression and the Radahn Festival affect the available encounters.
- RequiredAccess to LimgraveThe first encounter is outdoors near Saintsbridge, so the player must be able to travel through northern Limgrave.
- RecommendedAccess to Gael TunnelAlexander's early battlefield encounter is inside Gael Tunnel on the Limgrave-Caelid border.
- RecommendedAccess to Redmane CastleThe festival meeting and the Starscourge Radahn battle require reaching the castle's festival state.
- RequiredOil PotAn Oil Pot is needed to make Alexander easier to free from the ground in Liurnia. The recipe comes from the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [17].
- RecommendedAccess to Mt. GelmirThe lava encounter is in Mt. Gelmir and requires surviving the surrounding volcanic area.
- RequiredAccess to Crumbling Farum AzulaThe final duel cannot be completed until the player reaches the late-game region.
ObjectivesSpoilers

- Continue Alexander's journey through Caelid and LiurniaMeet him in Gael Tunnel, at the Radahn Festival, and south of the Carian Study Hall.
- Help Alexander leave the lava in Mt. GelmirSpeak with him in the lava after reaching the volcanic area.

WalkthroughSpoilers
- 01
Locate and free Iron Fist Alexander
Find Alexander trapped near SaintsbridgeTravel north of Saintsbridge in Limgrave and listen for Alexander calling from a hole in the ground. Approach the exposed rear of the jar and strike him with a controlled attack until the impact frees him; attacking repeatedly after he is released can turn a rescue into an unintended fight.
Location: Limgrave, north of Saintsbridge
TipUse a light attack rather than a powerful area attack so you can stop immediately when Alexander comes loose.
Watch outDo not kill Alexander during this first meeting if you want to follow the full quest and obtain the Shard of Alexander.
- 02
Complete the first conversation
Speak to Alexander after freeing himTalk to Alexander again once he is standing outside the hole. Continue the conversation until he repeats himself, then leave the area; his next appearance is tied to the battlefield in Gael Tunnel rather than the original hole.
Location: Limgrave, near Saintsbridge
TipRest or reload the area if Alexander does not immediately appear in his expected next location.
Watch outThe game has no quest marker for this storyline, so recording the last place where you exhausted his dialogue prevents confusion later.
- 03
Meet Alexander in Caelid
Visit Alexander in Gael TunnelEnter Gael Tunnel from the Limgrave side and progress through the miners toward the rear chamber. Alexander is in the tunnel's sealed-looking rear area; speak with him there before leaving, then continue your normal exploration toward Caelid.
Location: Gael Tunnel, rear chamber
TipThe tunnel contains hostile miners and narrow passages, so clear enough space around Alexander to avoid starting a fight while trying to interact.
Watch outThis meeting can be skipped by progressing far into later story events, but Alexander's later appearances can still be encountered if his storyline has not been ended.
- 04
Advance Alexander's story at the festival
Meet Alexander at the Radahn FestivalWhen Redmane Castle is hosting the Radahn Festival, enter the festival area and speak with Alexander among the assembled warriors. Exhaust his dialogue before beginning the battle, then use his summon sign in the Starscourge Radahn arena if you want him to participate.
Location: Redmane Castle and the Starscourge Radahn arena
TipSummon signs for the festival combatants are placed around the arena and can be used repeatedly during the fight after a summoned ally dies.
Watch outThe summon is optional and is not the same as completing the conversation; speak with Alexander before and after the battle whenever he is available.
- 05
Free Alexander with an Oil Pot
Find Alexander in Liurnia of the LakesTravel to the area south of the Carian Study Hall, where Alexander is again stuck in the ground. Craft or obtain an Oil Pot, throw it at him to soften the jar, and then strike his rear once or a small number of times until he is released.
Location: Liurnia of the Lakes, south of the Carian Study Hall
TipPlace the Oil Pot carefully so it hits Alexander without making you fall or drawing nearby enemies into the interaction.
Watch outAn ordinary attack without first using the Oil Pot may fail to free him, wasting time and potentially placing you in a bad position near the cliffside.
- 06
Continue Alexander's training
Speak to Alexander in Mt. GelmirReach the lava field in Mt. Gelmir near Seethewater Terminus and search the volcanic pool for Alexander. Approach through the lava, speak with him, and exhaust his dialogue; he remains in the heat because he is testing himself rather than asking to be removed immediately.
Location: Mt. Gelmir, lava near Seethewater Terminus
TipIncrease fire protection and carry healing supplies before entering the lava, because the environment continues damaging you while the conversation is active.
Watch outThe lava encounter is not a conventional rescue. Do not waste attacks trying to knock Alexander out of the pool; the required progression is dialogue.
- 07
Optionally fight alongside Alexander
Summon Alexander for the Fire GiantAfter reaching the Fire Giant encounter, look for Alexander's gold summon sign near the arena entrance if you want his assistance. The summon helps connect his story to the war in the Mountaintops, but the boss can be defeated without using it.
Location: Fire Giant arena
TipUse the summon only if its additional combat presence benefits your strategy, since extra allies can change a boss's targeting and effective health.
Watch outMissing this summon does not by itself end Alexander's quest; it is an optional battle appearance rather than a mandatory rescue step.
- 08
Locate Alexander's final position
Reach Crumbling Farum AzulaProgress through the late game until Crumbling Farum Azula becomes accessible. Alexander's final location is reached from the Dragon Temple area, so continue beyond the early platforms and search the elevated ruins rather than expecting him near the region's entrance.
Location: Crumbling Farum Azula
TipActivate nearby Sites of Grace before searching the ruins; the route includes dangerous enemies and falls, and the duel can be retried from the surrounding area if necessary.
Watch outThis is the last opportunity to preserve the full quest reward. Killing Alexander before accepting the final duel gives a different, weaker talisman.
- 09
Defeat Iron Fist Alexander honorably
Accept Alexander's final duelSpeak with Alexander at his final position and choose to begin the duel. The fight takes place against Alexander alone, so use the open space to circle him, punish the recovery after his attacks, and avoid pushing him toward a dangerous edge.
Location: Crumbling Farum Azula, near the Dragon Temple area
TipAlexander is a large target with clear attack recoveries, but his jar body can absorb punishment; attack during the end of his swings rather than trading hits at close range.
Watch outOnce the duel starts, Alexander is hostile until defeated. Do not leave the area expecting the conversation to resume without resolving the fight.
- 10
Collect the final rewards
Collect the Shard of AlexanderAfter winning the duel, loot Alexander's remains to receive the Shard of Alexander and Alexander's Innards. The Shard is the quest's main gameplay reward, while the innards are relevant to Jar-Bairn's storyline in Jarburg.
Location: Crumbling Farum Azula
TipCheck the talisman description before deciding whether to replace an existing damage talisman; the Shard specifically improves weapon Skills rather than every form of damage.
Watch outIf Alexander was killed earlier, the final duel and its Shard cannot be recovered on that playthrough.
Mission mechanics
Alexander's quest is driven by world-state encounters rather than a visible objective list. His position changes after dialogue, regional progression and major events, so the reliable procedure is to speak to him until he repeats himself, complete the nearby event when relevant, and then reload or leave the region before searching for his next appearance.
The two rescue encounters use different mechanics. Near Saintsbridge, physical strikes to the rear free Alexander from the hole. In Liurnia, an Oil Pot must be thrown first because the hardened material around him is more difficult to break through ordinary force. These interactions are noncombat puzzles: positioning and stopping at the correct moment matter more than damage output.
The battle summons are separate from the quest's required conversations. Alexander may appear as a gold summon for Starscourge Radahn and Fire Giant, allowing the player to see him act as a frontline warrior. Neither summon is required for the final reward, so a player who prefers a solo boss challenge can preserve the quest without using them.
What works and what does not
Strengths
- The quest rewards players who use weapon Skills frequently, because the Shard of Alexander directly improves Skill damage.
- Alexander's summon signs provide extra pressure and a durable melee presence in the Starscourge Radahn and Fire Giant battles.
- The storyline naturally overlaps with major regions and bosses, so it can be advanced during ordinary exploration rather than requiring a separate activity.
Weaknesses
- There is no quest marker or journal entry that identifies Alexander's next location.
- Several encounters are separated by large areas, making the quest easy to pause and forget.
- The best reward is missable if Alexander is killed before the final duel.
- The Mt. Gelmir stage requires the player to endure environmental lava damage while talking.
Best uses
- Prioritize the quest on builds centered on Ashes of War, weapon Skills or other skill-based attacks.
- Use Alexander's summons when additional frontline support is more valuable than maintaining a solo boss's normal health and targeting behavior.
- If the talisman reward matters, treat every early Alexander encounter as nonlethal and reserve the final fight for Crumbling Farum Azula.
Final duel phasesSpoilers
- 1Not displayed as a separate phase
Opening exchange
Starts: Begins when the player accepts Alexander's challenge in Crumbling Farum Azula.
Alexander uses his large jar body and heavy melee attacks in a confined duel. Stay close enough to bait an attack, then punish the recovery rather than attacking through his swings.
- Jar-body melee swingsTell Alexander winds up his broad arm and body attacks before swinging through the space in front of him.Answer Roll toward the recovery or circle behind him, then use a short attack or Skill before retreating.
- Heavy jumping or body attackTell He rises or commits his weight forward, producing a larger impact zone than a normal swing.Answer Create distance during the wind-up and roll through the landing; do not stand beneath the impact.
- The duel is against Alexander alone, so healing is safer after a committed attack than during his neutral stance.
- Do not rely on blocking every hit; his heavy attacks can drain stamina and leave the player vulnerable to the follow-up.
- 2Not displayed as a separate phase
Endurance finish
Starts: Alexander continues the same moveset as his health is reduced; the game does not present a conventional second boss phase.
The fight remains a test of timing rather than a scripted transformation. Keep the camera controlled, avoid the nearby drop-offs, and finish the duel without trading repeated blows.
- Repeated close-range chainTell Alexander can continue attacking if the player remains directly in front of him after the first impact.Answer Use one punish, then reset to neutral instead of extending a slow combo.
- Fast weapons and short Skills are safer than long animations unless Alexander has clearly finished his attack.
- The arena's open spacing allows ranged attacks, but melee players can win consistently by waiting for his recovery windows.
Iron Fist Alexander duelSpoilers
- LocationCrumbling Farum Azula, near the Dragon Temple area
- HealthNot specified in the game interface
The safest approach is to stay just outside the range of his broad swings, roll through the attack as it lands, and answer with one or two attacks before resetting. Players using weapon Skills should favor quick activations because the Shard of Alexander is only awarded after the duel, not during it. There is no need to rush: the fight has no timed objective, and waiting for a clean opening is safer than trading damage.
Weaknesses
- Alexander is vulnerable to ordinary physical punishment and can be staggered by committed heavy attacks.
- His large body gives the player a broad target, particularly during recovery animations.
Rewards
- Shard of Alexander
- Alexander's Innards
Choices and consequencesSpoilers
- Help Alexander at Saintsbridge and in Liurnia
The quest continues and preserves access to the final duel and Shard of Alexander.
- SpoilerKill Alexander before the final duel
The quest ends immediately. The player receives the Warrior Jar Shard, but cannot obtain the stronger Shard of Alexander during that playthrough.
- Summon Alexander for Starscourge Radahn
Alexander participates in the boss battle, but using or ignoring the summon does not determine whether the quest can continue.
- Summon Alexander for Fire Giant
Alexander can fight beside the player. Skipping the summon does not remove the final duel.
- SpoilerAccept Alexander's final duel
Alexander becomes hostile and must be defeated to complete his storyline and obtain the Shard of Alexander.

- 01MissableWarrior Jar Shard
Where: Obtained by killing Alexander before the final duel
An early alternative talisman that boosts the attack power of Skills, but is weaker than the Shard of Alexander.
- 02MissableShard of Alexander
Where: Crumbling Farum Azula, after defeating Alexander in the final duel
The quest's superior talisman reward. It increases the attack power of Skills and is especially valuable for weapon-skill-focused builds.
- 03MissableAlexander's Innards
Where: Crumbling Farum Azula, after the final duel
A quest item used in the later Jar-Bairn storyline in Jarburg.
Failure conditionsSpoilers
- Kill Alexander before reaching the final duelThis ends the storyline and awards the Warrior Jar Shard instead of allowing the player to earn the Shard of Alexander.
- Leave a rescue encounter without completing the required interactionAt Saintsbridge, Alexander must be struck free; in Liurnia, an Oil Pot must be used before the follow-up strike. Simply speaking to him does not resolve either rescue.
- Fail to search for Alexander after regional progressionThe game does not provide an automatic quest marker. The player may need to revisit his known locations after the Radahn Festival, Fire Giant or other major progression events.
- Begin the final duel unpreparedThe encounter is not a dialogue-only conclusion. Once accepted, Alexander becomes hostile, so heal, equip the intended weapon and prepare before interacting.
On failure
Normal defeat in the final duel is not a quest failure; retry the encounter from the nearby area and defeat Alexander to continue.
RewardsSpoilers
- Shard of AlexanderA talisman obtained from the final duel. It substantially increases the attack power of weapon Skills, making it a major choice for builds that regularly use Ashes of War.
- Alexander's InnardsA quest item dropped after the final duel. It can be delivered during Jar-Bairn's storyline in Jarburg.
- Warrior Jar ShardThe alternative talisman obtained by killing Alexander early. It also boosts Skill damage but is weaker than the Shard of Alexander, so it is generally inferior for a full quest completion.
Characters in this missionSpoilers
AftermathSpoilers
Do not spend Alexander's Innards immediately
After the final duel, Alexander's Innards can be used in Jar-Bairn's storyline in Jarburg. If you are following that connected quest, keep the item until Jar-Bairn asks for it rather than treating it as an ordinary consumable.
Trivia
- Alexander's storyline repeatedly frames his movement from one battlefield to the next as a warrior's pilgrimage rather than a conventional fetch quest.
- The early and late talismans share the same Skill-damage theme, but the Shard of Alexander is the reward for preserving the character's complete arc.
- The final duel is presented as Alexander's chosen test, so the quest resolves through combat even though most earlier meetings are friendly conversations or rescue interactions.
- Alexander's Innards create a direct narrative connection between his conclusion and Jar-Bairn's storyline in Jarburg.
