Overview
Liurnia of the Lakes is a vast overworld region in Elden Ring’s The Lands Between, defined by a flooded basin surrounded by cliffs, ruined settlements, sorcerous institutions, and the remnants of Carian royalty. It forms one of the game’s major early-to-midgame regions, combining open exploration with several landmark destinations that support different routes through the wider world.
Rather than functioning as a single city or linear zone, Liurnia is a broad landscape whose shallow lake, elevated shores, ravines, and rocky uplands create a varied exploration space. The waterlogged center gives the region its identity, while the surrounding heights contain roads, churches, towers, ruins, villages, and fortified sites. Movement between these areas is shaped less by a single central route than by the contrast between open lake travel and narrow approaches along the region’s boundaries.
The region’s strongest visual and thematic presence comes from Raya Lucaria Academy, whose isolated complex rises from the lake as the center of Liurnia’s glintstone-sorcery culture. Its influence is balanced by the western Carian estates and by older settlements whose ruins show the consequences of conflict, abandonment, and magical decline. This mixture gives Liurnia a distinct identity: it is both a place of scholarly power and a landscape marked by the collapse of the societies that once controlled it.
Liurnia also acts as a crossroads in Elden Ring’s larger progression. Its destinations connect exploration to several different forms of play, including a major legacy dungeon, optional estate and tower areas, underground routes, character storylines, and access toward later parts of the Lands Between. The region can therefore support different priorities without reducing its content to one required sequence: a player may focus on the academy, investigate the western highlands, follow an NPC-led storyline, or use the open terrain to discover routes and landmarks at their own pace.
Narratively, Liurnia is closely associated with the Carian royal family, the academy’s sorcerers, and the aftermath of the Shattering. The region’s major sites present competing relationships between scholarship, royal authority, faith, and inherited power, while its ruined villages and hostile waters show the human cost of those struggles. Its importance extends beyond the events found directly in the lake: Liurnia establishes several characters, institutions, and conflicts that continue to shape the player’s understanding of the Lands Between as the journey moves toward the plateau and the deeper regions beyond it.
Map and Position
Liurnia of the Lakes occupies the northern-central part of the Lands Between. It lies north of Limgrave, with Stormveil Castle forming the most prominent southern approach, and west of the Altus Plateau. The region is identified on the overworld map by its broad flooded basin, scattered islands, shallow lake routes, and the elevated land around its western and eastern margins. Numeric coordinates are omitted because Elden Ring does not provide a standard player-facing coordinate system.
Position on the Overworld Map
Liurnia is an overworld region rather than an underground map layer or instanced area. Its southern boundary meets Limgrave around Stormveil Castle and the Lake-Facing Cliffs. The Altus Plateau lies beyond its northern and eastern routes, reached through the Grand Lift of Dectus or the ravine ascent. The region's western side extends toward the lake settlements and high ground surrounding the Academy of Raya Lucaria, while its eastern side rises toward the road and lift routes leading out of the basin.
Southern Entrances from Limgrave
The primary arrival point is the passage beyond Stormveil Castle, which opens onto the Lake-Facing Cliffs and provides an immediate Site of Grace anchor. Stormveil is not the only practical route: the castle can be bypassed using the narrow cliffside path along its eastern edge, allowing access to the same general southern Liurnia approach without completing the dungeon. These are separate approaches to the region and should not be treated as a single entrance.
Routes Toward Altus Plateau
Liurnia connects to the Altus Plateau through two major overland routes. The Grand Lift of Dectus provides the direct transition when its required medallion halves have been assembled. A second route climbs through the northern ravine, passing the Ravine-Veiled Village before reaching the plateau by an alternative ascent. These routes differ in access requirements and terrain, but both connect the overworld basin to Altus.
Local Map Anchors and Lower Access
The Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace is the clearest southern navigation anchor for first entering Liurnia. Other useful map references include the Academy Gate Town and the Academy of Raya Lucaria, which occupy prominent positions within the flooded basin. The Ainsel River Well provides a descent from Liurnia into the underground Ainsel River system; this is a vertical transition to a separate map layer, not an extension of the region's overworld terrain.
How to Reach
Before you start
- Base game access to The Lands Between and the Limgrave overworld.
- No mandatory key, quest, boss, DLC, or mode requirement when using the eastern Stormveil bypass.
- The direct Stormveil route requires progressing through the castle, but defeating Stormveil’s bosses is optional if you use the bypass.
- 01Begin in Limgrave and travel north toward Stormveil Castle. The direct approach leads through Stormveil: enter the castle, defeat its required progression bosses, and continue through the northern exit. The route ends at the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace, on Liurnia’s southern edge, where the region’s overworld opens into the flooded lake basin.
- 02You do not need to clear Stormveil to enter Liurnia. From the Limgrave side of Stormveil, take the narrow cliffside bypass around the castle’s eastern side instead of entering through the main gate. Follow this path across the broken bridge and uphill until it reaches the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace; this is the practical early-game entrance to the region.
- 03The Stormveil bypass is not a one-way transition. Once you reach Liurnia, you can return to Limgrave by retracing the route or by using the connected overworld roads and paths. No key item, quest completion, boss victory, DLC purchase, or alternate game mode is required to enter Liurnia by the bypass.
- 04If you approach from another part of the Lands Between later in the game, Liurnia can also be entered through its other connected overworld routes. These are not required for first access: the southern Stormveil approach remains the clearest route, and the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace provides the main navigation anchor after arrival.
Layout and Subareas
Lake Liurnia and the flooded basin
The defining shape of Liurnia is its broad, shallow lake, which occupies the region’s central low ground and separates the surrounding uplands into distinct approaches. Roads, broken ruins, islands, submerged structures, and isolated rock shelves interrupt the water rather than forming a single uninterrupted route. The lake is generally traversable on Torrent, making it the region’s main connective space, but its open sightlines can conceal enemies, map fragments, entrances, and structures that are easier to identify from the surrounding cliffs.
The basin connects the southern entrance near the Lake-Facing Cliffs to the Academy peninsula, the western shore below the manor country, and the eastern escarpment. Several Sites of Grace and map markers provide practical navigation anchors, but the lake itself is not a fast-travel destination. Its most important layout function is that it turns Liurnia into a region of radial exploration: a traveler can approach many landmarks from several directions, while cliffs and sealed entrances reserve certain upper areas for specific routes or progression.
Southern Liurnia and the Academy Gate Town
The southern approach rises from Limgrave into the lake country through the Lake-Facing Cliffs and the marshy ground around the Academy Gate Town. Academy Gate Town forms a ruined settlement spread across the water and shallow islands rather than a compact town with intact streets. Its broken buildings and narrow routes provide a transition between the open southern lake and the fortified Academy peninsula to the north.
From this area, the Academy can be approached by following the ruined gate-town routes and locating the academy’s sealed entrances. The gate town is therefore both a navigational landmark and a buffer zone: it introduces Liurnia’s flooded urban ruins before the region’s principal legacy dungeon. Western and eastern routes remain available around the basin, so reaching the gate town does not by itself force entry into the Academy.
Raya Lucaria Academy and its peninsula
Raya Lucaria Academy occupies a fortified island or peninsula in central Liurnia, visually distinct from the surrounding marshes through its walls, towers, rooftops, and elevated magical architecture. Its outer approach is reached from the lake and Academy Gate Town, while the interior is arranged as a large legacy dungeon with several vertically layered routes. The academy is not simply another lake landmark: its gates and interior progression divide the surrounding region from the dungeon spaces beyond them.
The academy’s position makes it a central reference point for Liurnia’s map. The southern gate faces the lake approaches, while other routes and sealed entrances direct exploration around the complex. The area contains courtyards, rooftops, halls, and elevated structures that connect through dungeon paths rather than through ordinary open-world roads. Its interior should be treated as a separate enclosed subarea within the broader region, even though its exterior walls and gates dominate the central lake skyline.
Western uplands, Caria Manor, and the Three Sisters
The western side of Liurnia rises sharply from the lake into wooded uplands and manor country. Caria Manor occupies the northern end of this route behind a dangerous approach marked by magical defenses and hostile hands. Its walls and grounds form a clear boundary between the open western landscape and a more concentrated dungeon-like estate. The manor’s northern passage leads into the Three Sisters, a raised area of towers and open ground that is spatially separate from the lake below.
The Three Sisters functions as a high western-northern terrace rather than a conventional settlement. Its towers are distributed across a relatively open area reached after passing through Caria Manor, and the surrounding cliffs prevent it from being approached freely from every direction. This relationship gives the western route a distinct sequence: lake shore and uplands below, Caria Manor as the fortified threshold, then the Three Sisters beyond it. The area also provides access to important story-linked locations without being merged with the manor interior.
Eastern escarpment and elevated settlements
Liurnia’s eastern side is dominated by cliffs and elevated ground above the lake. This escarpment carries routes toward the Divine Tower of Liurnia and the Carian Study Hall, while lower paths connect to isolated settlements built into or beneath the rock. The vertical arrangement is important: several eastern landmarks are not simply adjacent points on the lake shore, but destinations reached by following cliff roads, bridges, or special access routes.
Jarburg is built into a sheltered cliffside on the eastern side, below the more prominent elevated routes. The Village of the Albinaurics occupies a separate southern-western pocket beneath cliffs, reached through a narrow approach rather than by crossing the lake’s central open space. These settlements demonstrate Liurnia’s layered design: the region’s named sites may be close on the map while differing substantially in elevation, approach, and practical connection to the basin.
Northern plateau and the Moonlight Altar
Beyond the manor country, northern Liurnia continues into higher ground and story-linked locations that are not reached by simply following the lake shore. The Moonlight Altar is a distinct elevated plateau associated with the region’s northern progression. Its terrain is more open and exposed than the flooded basin, and its boundaries, cliffs, and access route make it a destination reached through specific progression rather than an ordinary early detour from the lake.
The northern plateau should remain distinct from both Caria Manor and the Three Sisters. The manor and Three Sisters form the western route into this part of Liurnia, but the Moonlight Altar is a later, separate area with its own landmarks and encounter spaces. Treating these places as separate subareas preserves the region’s progression-based vertical structure and avoids presenting the entire northern end as one continuous, freely accessible surface.
Points of Interest
Academy of Raya Lucaria and Its Gate Network
The Academy of Raya Lucaria is Liurnia’s defining landmark and the region’s largest fortified complex. Its outer gates, sealed entrances, rooftops, courtyards, and internal lecture halls make it more than a single visible structure: the academy functions as a major destination with its own progression route, enemy population, and boss encounters. The Main Academy Gate also serves as a useful orientation point on the lake, while the South Raya Lucaria Gate and East Raya Lucaria Gate mark important approaches through the surrounding waterlogged terrain. Players visit the academy for its central story progression, sorcery-related rewards, and access to the debate halls and higher sections of the complex.
Caria Manor and the Northwest Estates
Caria Manor occupies the northern approach to the elevated western part of Liurnia. Its grounds are a distinctive destination because the manor’s hazards, spectral guardians, and enclosed garden route lead to a major encounter and onward access to the Three Sisters. The manor is also the principal approach to the area’s Carian quest and lore content. Nearby, the converted tower landmarks provide optional exploration and puzzle-oriented rewards, while the road toward the northwest plateau connects the manor’s grounds with later-accessible sites rather than ending at the estate itself.
Churches, Shrines, and the Four Belfries
The Church of Vows is one of Liurnia’s most useful landmarks rather than a purely scenic ruin. It houses Miriel, Pastor of Vows, and provides a distinctive religious service associated with absolution, making it a destination for players managing certain NPC-hostility consequences. The Rose Church, standing among the shallow waters west of the academy, is tied to Varre’s later activities and contains an important invasion-related interaction. Farther west, the Four Belfries is a hilltop landmark with three functioning waygates and a special key requirement; its portals provide access to isolated destination areas and make the site valuable even after its initial exploration.
Villages and Unusual Settlements
The Village of the Albinaurics lies beneath the western cliffs and is a meaningful destination for both exploration and quest progression. Its concealed approach, surviving inhabitants, and village landmark distinguish it from the open lake settlements. Jarburg, hidden on the eastern cliffside below the Liurnia escarpment, is a peaceful jar settlement reached by careful descent; it becomes especially significant through Jar-Bairn’s quest and related NPC progression. These settlements are easy to miss because neither is presented as a conventional fortified town, but each offers content that cannot be reduced to ordinary enemy camps or roadside ruins.
Major Lake and Boundary Landmarks
The Grand Lift of Dectus stands at Liurnia’s northeastern boundary and is the region’s most important overland threshold to Altus Plateau. Its operation depends on the appropriate medallion halves, so the lift is both a geographic landmark and a progression gate. The Divine Tower of Liurnia rises on an isolated eastern section reached through the Carian Study Hall, giving it a deliberately indirect relationship with the surrounding map. At the southern edge, the Liurnia Lake-facing approaches and the lake’s academy-side ruins provide orientation for travel across the flooded basin, while the Moonlight Altar becomes a late-access destination associated with Ranni’s quest rather than a freely available early landmark.
Characters and Vendors
- Ranni the WitchQuestgiver at Ranni's Rise in northwest Liurnia; her service introduces the Carian questline and its associated characters.
- Pidia, Carian ServantHidden merchant in Caria Manor who sells sorceries, spirit-related items, and other goods.
- White-Faced VarreAppears at the Rose Church and advances a questline involving Mohg, Lord of Blood, and access to Mohgwyn Palace.
- PatchesMay relocate to the Scenic Isle, where he acts as a merchant and continues his recurring trickster questline.
- Latenna the AlbinauricFound at the Slumbering Wolf's Shack after the Village of the Albinaurics events; she can become a Spirit Ash summon.
- Rennala, Queen of the Full MoonThe principal ruler of Raya Lucaria Academy and its Grand Library, where she is fought as a major regional boss.
Quests and Events
- 01Ranni the Witch's Quest
Liurnia is the central setting for the early and middle stages of Ranni's quest. Ranni's Rise in the Three Sisters serves as her headquarters, while the quest later routes through Renna's Rise, the Ainsel River, Nokstella, and the Moonlight Altar in southwestern Liurnia. The quest's major outcome changes access to the Age of Stars ending.
- 02White-Faced Varre's Quest
White-Faced Varre's quest moves to the Rose Church after the player reaches Liurnia. The church hosts his invasion-related event and establishes the path toward the Lord of Blood's dynasty, culminating in access to Mohgwyn Palace through the Pureblood Knight's Medal or the later portal route.
- 03Sorcerer Thops's Quest
Sorcerer Thops's quest begins at the Church of Irith and continues into Raya Lucaria Academy. Giving Thops an Academy Glintstone Key allows him to relocate to the Schoolhouse Classroom, where his later death provides the Thops's Barrier sorcery and other academy-related rewards.
- 04Latenna's Quest
Latenna's quest begins in the Lakeside Crystal Cave after the player reaches the Slumbering Wolf's Shack. The Albinauric woman asks the player to carry the Haligtree Secret Medallion and later appears at the Village of the Albinaurics, making Liurnia the starting point for the route to the Consecrated Snowfield.
- 05Hyetta's Quest
Hyetta first appears at the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace, where her quest introduces the Shabriri Grape item and the recurring choice to provide it to her. Her Liurnia appearances continue near the Purified Ruins and the Gate Town Bridge before the quest leaves the region.
- 06Boc the Seamster's Quest
Boc's quest passes through several Liurnia locations after his Limgrave introduction. He can be found near the East Raya Lucaria Gate and later at the Raya Lucaria East Gate Site of Grace, where his tailoring service and the choice involving Rennala's Great Rune affect his final location and outcome.
- 07Diallos's Quest
Diallos's quest brings him from the Roundtable Hold to Academy Gate Town in Liurnia. His search for Lanya is resolved there, after which the quest moves to Volcano Manor and later Jarburg; the Liurnia event is the point where his personal storyline changes direction.
- 08Rya's Quest
Rya's first major encounter occurs in Liurnia near the Laskyar Ruins and the Scenic Isle. Recovering her stolen necklace begins her storyline and leads to an invitation to Volcano Manor, with Liurnia serving as the introduction to her connection with the manor and the recusant faction.
- 09Sorceress Sellen's Quest
Liurnia is the location of Sellen's late quest confrontation at the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. After the events involving Jerren and Sellen's imprisoned or alternate bodies elsewhere, the player chooses a side at the academy entrance, producing different rewards and determining Sellen's resulting state in the library.
- 10Yura, Hunter of Bloody Fingers' Quest
Yura's quest reaches Liurnia at the Main Academy Gate, where the player can assist him against Bloody Finger Ravenmount Assassin. This invasion follows the earlier Limgrave encounter and advances Yura's pursuit of Bloody Fingers before the quest continues toward Altus Plateau.
Enemies and Encounters
Regional Threat Profile
Liurnia of the Lakes combines open-water hazards with sorcery-focused strongholds, ruined settlements, caves, catacombs, and manor grounds. Its ordinary enemy population includes Glintstone Sorcerers and Raya Lucarian soldiers around the Academy, Cuckoo forces on the roads, Albinaurics in villages and hidden settlements, demi-humans, wolves, giant land octopi, crayfish, marionettes, and glintstone miners in underground workings. These groups are generally fixed to particular areas and are not procedural encounters, although some roaming enemies and patrols can reposition between visits.
Field Bosses and Roaming Encounters
Several major encounters are placed in the overworld rather than behind a conventional dungeon-boss fog gate. Glintstone Dragon Smarag occupies the waters near the Academy and can be approached without defeating it; the dragon encounter is also relevant to access to the Academy's key. Magma Wyrm Makar guards the Ruin-Strewn Precipice route toward the Altus Plateau. Royal Knight Loretta is the fixed boss of Caria Manor, while the Erdtree Avatar at the Minor Erdtree and the Death Rite Bird encountered at night represent separate regional threats.
Other fixed field encounters include Deathbirds that appear only at night, a Bell Bearing Hunter encounter at the Church of Vows under its night-time conditions, and hostile or elite enemies associated with specific ruins and roads. These encounters should not be treated as a single region-wide boss roster: each is tied to a particular site, time condition, or route.
Dungeon Bosses and Major Elite Fights
Liurnia's caves, tunnels, catacombs, and other enclosed sites supply additional fixed fights. Notable examples include the Red Wolf of Radagon and Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in the Academy of Raya Lucaria; the Bloodhound Knight in Lakeside Crystal Cave; the Cleanrot Knight in Stillwater Cave; the Crystalians in Academy Crystal Cave; and the Black Knife Assassin in Black Knife Catacombs. Burial Watchdogs and other dungeon bosses appear in the region's catacombs, with their exact encounter depending on the individual dungeon rather than the region's general enemy population.
The Academy also contains Moongrum, Carian Knight, a named elite encounter before the Debate Parlor, while Caria Manor uses spectral hands, manor guards, and other site-specific enemies around its approach to Royal Knight Loretta. These are fixed encounters, not random invasions or repeatable procedural events.
Invasions and Nonstandard Threats
Liurnia contains hostile NPC and invasion-style encounters in addition to its bosses. Bloody Finger Hunter Yura's quest can lead to a red-summon invasion encounter at the Main Academy Gate, and other quest-linked summon signs or hostile NPCs may appear according to progression. These events are conditional rather than guaranteed on every visit. The region has no procedural encounter system: roaming enemies, night-only bosses, dungeon fights, and quest-linked invasions follow established locations and conditions.
Items and Loot
Fixed weapons and boss rewards
Liurnia contains several distinctive weapons obtained from named sites or encounters rather than ordinary enemy drops. The Sword of Night and Flame is located in Caria Manor, while the Carian Knight's Sword is found in a carriage in western Liurnia. The Crystal Sword is obtainable in the Village of the Albinaurics. Royal Knight Loretta at Caria Manor rewards both Loretta's Greatbow and Loretta's War Sickle, and the Death Rite Bird encountered at night in Liurnia drops the Death Ritual Spear. The Lazuli Glintstone Sword is a random drop from Lazuli Sorcerers, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed pickup.
Raya Lucaria equipment and sorcery rewards
Raya Lucaria Academy is the region's main source of unique magical equipment and sorcery-related rewards. The Academy Glintstone Key is the essential key item used to enter the academy and can also advance Thops's quest when given to him; the additional key found inside the academy is associated with that quest rather than functioning as a second entrance key. Defeating Rennala grants the Remembrance of the Full Moon and a Great Rune. The remembrance can be exchanged for Rennala's Full Moon or the Carian Regal Scepter. The Academy also contains the Radagon Icon and Graven-School Talisman, while Terra Magica is found in the Academy Crystal Cave beneath the academy's vicinity. The Glintstone Kris can be received through the later outcome of Sellen's questline at the academy.
Quest and progression items
Important non-equipment rewards include the right half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, obtained from Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics, and the Cursemark of Death, found at the top of the Divine Tower of Liurnia. The latter is a key quest item connected to Ranni's storyline and the route toward the Deeproot Depths. The Carian Inverted Statue is likewise tied to that questline, although it is received from Ranni rather than collected as ordinary regional loot. Larval Tears can be found at several Liurnia locations and are valuable because they enable Rennala's rebirth system; their placement should be distinguished from random enemy drops and common crafting materials.
Notable late-quest reward
If Ranni's quest is completed, the Dark Moon Greatsword is obtained at the Cathedral of Manus Celes in the Moonlight Altar area. This reward is strongly associated with Liurnia's late progression, but it should not be presented as an early regional pickup or as a standard reward from Raya Lucaria.
Services and Facilities
Sites of Grace as Regional Hubs
Liurnia of the Lakes contains numerous Sites of Grace that function as rest, leveling, flask-management, map, and fast-travel anchors within the overworld. They also provide access to the storage chest and crafting interface available through the standard Site of Grace menu. Important regional anchors include Liurnia Lake Shore, Academy Gate Town, Main Academy Gate, East Raya Lucaria Gate, Bellum Church, and the Sites of Grace around Caria Manor. The region itself is not a single fast-travel point; travel is handled through its individual Sites of Grace.
Smithing Along the Road to Manor
Smithing Master Iji operates at the Road to the Manor in northwestern Liurnia. He provides somber weapon upgrades and sells selected smithing materials, making the location a useful upgrade stop before entering Caria Manor or continuing toward the Three Sisters. Iji's services are separate from the standard Smithing Table found at some early-game sites, and his inventory and role are tied to the broader Blaidd and Ranni storyline.
Raya Lucaria and Rebirth
After the academy's major boss is defeated, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, provides the game's respec service from the Grand Library in Raya Lucaria. Rebirth requires a Larval Tear, so this facility is a progression-gated character-management service rather than an immediately available regional convenience. The Grand Library also serves as the setting for Rennala's remembrance-related encounter, although remembrance duplication and exchange services are handled through other systems.
Religious and Merchant Services
Miriel, Pastor of Vows, is based at the Church of Vows and can receive sorceries and incantations from compatible scrolls and prayerbooks. The church also supports absolution through Celestial Dew, subject to the game's eligibility rules. Liurnia additionally contains wandering and stationary merchants, including a Nomadic Merchant near the lake routes and Pidia, Carian Servant, in Caria Manor. Their inventories are location-specific and should not be treated as a single regional shop stock.
Hazards and Mechanics
Lake Traversal and Deep Water
Liurnia’s defining environmental mechanic is its flooded overworld. Most of the lake is shallow enough to cross on foot or with Torrent, but the game does not support swimming. Deep water functions as a lethal boundary rather than a traversable route, so players must use exposed shallows, roads, ruins, bridges, and elevated islands to move between areas. Mounted traversal is especially useful for crossing open stretches and avoiding enemies encountered in the water.
Local Dungeon and Ruin Hazards
The region’s more dangerous environmental mechanics are concentrated inside its named sites rather than applied uniformly across the overworld. Raya Lucaria’s magical defenses and enclosed combat spaces make its approach and interior hazardous, while caves, catacombs, and ruins can introduce darkness, traps, confined routes, or ambush spaces. These conditions belong to the individual dungeon or ruin and should not be treated as a permanent region-wide effect.
Weather and Status Effects
Liurnia’s rain and mist establish its visual identity, but they are not a separately documented hazard system that steadily damages the player or imposes a special regional debuff. Likewise, poison, scarlet rot, and darkness should be attributed only to specific encounters or subareas when present, not to the lake as a whole. This distinction matters because the overworld’s principal navigation risk is deep water and hostile positioning, not a blanket environmental status effect.
Story and Lore
A Kingdom Shaped by the Moon and Glintstone
Liurnia of the Lakes was the heartland of the Carian royal family and the setting of the Raya Lucaria Academy’s rise. Its history is defined by a tension between lunar sorcery and the Golden Order: the Carian royals followed the guidance of the moon, while the academy became the foremost center of glintstone scholarship in the Lands Between. The region’s flooded landscape, isolated towers, ruined estates, and academy wards preserve evidence of a realm whose political power and intellectual authority once extended far beyond its present ruins.
The Carian royal line was associated with the Full Moon and its sorceries. Queen Rennala, head of the academy and ruler of Liurnia, led the kingdom during its conflict with the forces of the Erdtree. That conflict ended not with Liurnia’s destruction, but with a marriage between Rennala and Radagon, champion of the Golden Order. Their union brought an uneasy political settlement and produced three demigod children: Radahn, Rykard, and Ranni.
Rennala, Radagon, and the Academy’s Rebellion
Radagon eventually left Rennala to become consort to Queen Marika. His departure broke the political and personal foundation of the Carian kingdom. Rennala withdrew into the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria, where she remained focused on the amber egg gifted to her by Radagon. The academy’s scholars turned against their former leader, beginning the internal schism that left Raya Lucaria sealed and hostile to outsiders. This division explains why the academy appears less like a functioning school and more like a fortified remnant of Liurnia’s former order.
The rebellion did not erase the Carian tradition. Carian retainers continued to defend Caria Manor, while the Royal Moongazing Grounds, the Three Sisters, and the later Moonlight Altar preserve distinct parts of the royal family’s story. These sites connect Liurnia’s political history to Ranni’s rejection of the Two Fingers and to her effort to establish a fate guided by the dark moon rather than by the Greater Will.
The Shattering and Liurnia’s Ruined Present
By the time the Tarnished reaches Liurnia, the region is already living in the aftermath of the Shattering. Rennala is no longer an active ruler, Raya Lucaria is controlled by its hostile scholars, and the Carian royal household survives through scattered retainers and hidden heirs. The region’s major sites therefore represent separate remnants of authority: the academy preserves glintstone learning, Caria Manor preserves the royal household’s martial tradition, and Ranni’s domain preserves a possible alternative to the established cosmic order.
Liurnia also became a refuge for peoples who stood outside the dominant political structures. The Albinaurics’ settlements and underground routes show the consequences of their persecution and displacement. Their presence is part of the region’s broader history of exclusion: the academy’s prestige and the Golden Order’s influence coexist with communities that were created, used, or abandoned by more powerful institutions.
What the Landscape Records
The lake itself divides Liurnia’s surviving landmarks and contributes to the impression of a kingdom submerged beneath its own past. This is established environmental evidence rather than a single stated historical explanation: flooded roads, half-sunken ruins, isolated churches, and elevated estates show how settlement patterns adapted to the region’s waters. The academy’s position on an island and the manor’s defensive approach further emphasize the separation between scholarship, royalty, and the surrounding countryside.
It is reasonable to interpret the landscape as a visual record of political fragmentation, but the game does not present every ruin or flooded structure as a documented event. The strongest conclusions come from named locations, item descriptions, character dialogue, and the surviving institutions themselves. Liurnia is not simply a fallen kingdom; it is a place where Carian lunar tradition, academy glintstone culture, Golden Order politics, Albinauric displacement, and Ranni’s rebellion remain layered over one another.
World-State Changes
Quest Progression at the Three Sisters
Liurnia does not undergo a single region-wide transformation during the main story. Its clearest progression-dependent change occurs at the Three Sisters, the subregion beyond Caria Manor. Ranni's Rise is initially inaccessible because a magical seal blocks its entrance. After the player advances Ranni's quest and gives her the Fingerslayer Blade from Nokron, Eternal City, Ranni disappears and the seal at Renna's Rise is removed. The newly accessible tower contains a waygate to Ainsel River Main, changing the available route into the underground regions rather than altering Liurnia's overworld terrain.
This is a quest-state change, not a permanent replacement of the Three Sisters or Caria Manor. The area remains part of Liurnia's overworld, while Ranni's, Seluvis's, and Blaidd's presence and dialogue depend on the player's progress through the associated questline. These NPC states should not be treated as universal regional conditions.
Access to the Moonlight Altar
The Moonlight Altar becomes reachable only after progression through Ranni's quest, including defeating Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. The route from the Lake of Rot leads to this elevated Liurnia area, where the Cathedral of Manus Celes and the conclusion of Ranni's quest can be found. Before that progression, the Moonlight Altar is not an available destination from the ordinary Liurnia overworld route.
This change expands the accessible quest area but does not convert the rest of Liurnia into a different story state. The Moonlight Altar should therefore be represented as a progression-gated area within Liurnia, separate from the region's normal lake, academy, manor, and village environments.
States That Do Not Replace Liurnia's Normal Overworld
Defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, changes the encounter state inside the Raya Lucaria Academy and unlocks rebirth through Rennala, but it does not liberate, destroy, or otherwise transform Liurnia as a whole. Likewise, the region has no confirmed occupation or post-boss replacement state comparable to the late-game transformation of Leyndell. Night-only encounters and quest-specific NPC relocations are temporary or localized conditions rather than alternate versions of the entire region.

Trivia
- Liurnia’s shallow central lake can be traversed on Torrent, but Elden Ring has no swimming system; the water functions as traversable terrain rather than a separate underwater layer.
- The Academy of Raya Lucaria is designed as a prominent skyline landmark: its towers and enclosing walls can be seen across large portions of the surrounding lake and shoreline.
