Meeting the Tarnished at Miquella's Cocoon

Before entering the Land of Shadow, the Tarnished can encounter Needle Knight Leda at Miquella's withered arm in Mohgwyn Palace, the point of entry to the expansion. Her presence establishes that Miquella's followers are already gathering around the cocoon and that Leda has taken responsibility for guiding the pilgrimage. After the Tarnished touches the withered arm and enters the Land of Shadow, Leda becomes one of the first members of the group available for conversation and begins directing attention toward Miquella's scattered crosses.

Leda's early presentation is deliberately reassuring. She speaks as a devoted follower who believes that Miquella's trail can be followed by examining the marks left across the Land of Shadow. She treats the Tarnished as a potential fellow traveler rather than an immediate enemy, while her confidence gives the group a clear sense of purpose. At this stage, Leda's narrative function is to introduce the pilgrimage and its participants before the group begins to fracture.

The Pilgrimage Through the Land of Shadow

At the early Cross sites, Leda explains that Miquella's followers are pursuing the same path and encourages the Tarnished to learn more about them. Her conversations frame the group as a temporary alliance of people drawn to Miquella for different reasons. Leda presents herself as the person capable of maintaining that alliance, but the game also establishes that the followers do not share identical goals or loyalties.

Leda's role during this part of the story is primarily connective. She gives the Tarnished a reason to revisit the followers, points toward the crosses associated with Miquella's journey, and comments on the changing state of the pilgrimage. Her importance grows through these conversations rather than through a single major battle. The group appears united because Miquella's influence still gives its members a common direction, not because Leda has resolved their personal conflicts.

Miquella's Great Rune Breaks

As the Tarnished approaches Shadow Keep, Miquella's Great Rune breaks and the charm affecting the followers is removed. The change is announced to the player as a major turning point in the expansion. Leda reacts by reconsidering the people who had been traveling with her, and the previously calm pilgrimage takes on a more threatening tone. The followers begin to remember their former motives and obligations, while Leda interprets those revelations as possible evidence of betrayal.

This event changes Leda's position in the narrative. She is no longer simply explaining Miquella's route or speaking for a group with a shared purpose. She begins investigating the other followers and deciding whether they can still be trusted. Her suspicion is not directed equally at everyone at first: she focuses on individuals whose pasts or current actions appear incompatible with absolute devotion to Miquella. The player is drawn into these judgments through later summon signs and dialogue rather than through a single required declaration of allegiance.

Leda Turns Against Hornsent

Leda's first major target is Hornsent. After the charm breaks, Hornsent's hatred of Messmer and the forces responsible for the devastation of his people becomes more prominent. Leda regards that consuming desire for revenge as a danger to Miquella's cause. Her concern is not merely that Hornsent dislikes Messmer; she questions whether his personal vendetta leaves room for the loyalty and discipline she expects from a true follower.

The conflict becomes a player choice at Shadow Keep. The Tarnished can support Leda in her attempt to eliminate Hornsent or support Hornsent against Leda. These outcomes alter the immediate fate of the Hornsent and change the group that can later appear at Enir-Ilim. If Leda's side prevails, Hornsent's participation in the remaining story ends there. If the Tarnished helps Hornsent, he survives this confrontation and can continue along a different path through the expansion.

Leda's decision to pursue Hornsent shows how her standards work in practice. She does not wait for an explicit act of betrayal against Miquella before acting; she treats a competing motive as sufficient reason for suspicion. The encounter also makes her a direct threat to the followers she once gathered. From this point onward, Leda's quest is defined by the narrowing circle of people she considers acceptable companions.

Leda Investigates Ansbach

After dealing with Hornsent, or after the Hornsent conflict has progressed according to the player's choice, Leda turns her attention to Sir Ansbach. Ansbach's former service to Mohg makes him an obvious source of suspicion, particularly because Miquella's journey is connected to the remains of Mohg's dynasty and to the events that brought the Tarnished to the Land of Shadow. Ansbach is also investigating Miquella's plans in his own way, which gives Leda another reason to see him as a possible threat rather than a harmless scholar.

The confrontation with Ansbach is tied to the events at Shadow Keep and is again resolved through opposing summon signs. The Tarnished can assist Ansbach against Leda or assist Leda in removing Ansbach. Supporting Ansbach allows him to continue his investigation and preserves him as a possible participant in the final conflict. Supporting Leda removes Ansbach from the later stages of the pilgrimage and reinforces her control over the remaining group.

Leda's treatment of Ansbach makes her suspicion more severe than a simple concern about past affiliations. She is willing to condemn someone whose present actions may be useful to Miquella because she considers the person's history and independent judgment dangerous. Ansbach, by contrast, represents a follower who seeks understanding rather than unquestioning obedience. Their conflict places two different responses to Miquella's transformation in opposition: Leda responds by purging uncertainty, while Ansbach continues searching for an explanation.

The Followers Divide Before the Final Approach

The player choices involving Hornsent and Ansbach determine which of Miquella's followers remain aligned with Leda by the time the pilgrimage reaches its final area. Other questlines can also affect who is present or available, so the gathering at Enir-Ilim is not identical in every playthrough. Leda remains the central organizer, but the people standing beside her reflect the Tarnished's earlier decisions and the outcomes of the followers' individual stories.

This changing roster gives Leda's actions a continuing consequence beyond the individual invasions. Her investigations are not isolated encounters; they reshape the alliance that she intends to lead against the Tarnished. The followers who remain are united less by personal trust than by their connection to Miquella and by the direction Leda has imposed on the group. The pilgrimage has become a campaign in which dissent is treated as an obstacle to be removed.

The Battle at Enir-Ilim

At Enir-Ilim, Leda leads the surviving followers in an attack on the Tarnished. She appears as Needle Knight Leda, and the encounter functions as the culmination of her campaign to identify and eliminate threats within Miquella's circle. Dryleaf Dane is associated with the confrontation, while additional combatants can be present depending on which followers survived and which quest outcomes the Tarnished pursued. The battle is consequently both a major combat encounter and the final expression of the group's fragmented pilgrimage.

Leda's opening position in this battle is significant. She is no longer asking the Tarnished to accompany Miquella's followers or to help resolve their disagreements. She has concluded that the Tarnished is the enemy standing between Miquella and the completion of his path. Her certainty contrasts with the choices available earlier in the expansion, when the Tarnished could decide whether Leda's judgments were justified. By Enir-Ilim, the consequences of those decisions have gathered into one confrontation.

Defeating Leda ends her direct role in the story. The Tarnished can then proceed toward the final encounter connected to Miquella's ascent, while the surviving followers' outcomes depend on the earlier questline decisions. Leda does not become a participant in that final battle; her narrative ends with the attack she organized at Enir-Ilim. In structural terms, she serves as the gatekeeper of the followers' last stand rather than as Miquella's final champion.

Leda's Narrative Function

Across Shadow of the Erdtree, Leda changes from guide to enforcer. The breaking of Miquella's charm reveals the private motives of the followers, but Leda responds to that revelation by demanding greater certainty rather than accepting a more complicated alliance. Her decisions against Hornsent and Ansbach make the player participate in the group's division, and the resulting survivors determine the shape of the final battle at Enir-Ilim.

Leda's story also provides a human-scale version of the expansion's larger conflict over Miquella. The followers must decide whether devotion means obedience, understanding, revenge, or continued personal purpose. Leda chooses uncompromising loyalty and attempts to make the entire group conform to it. Her defeat marks the collapse of that effort, leaving the Tarnished to confront the consequences of Miquella's plan without the knight who tried to police the pilgrimage on his behalf.
