Key takeaways
These habits matter more than a single recommended weapon because Malenia punishes repeated defensive and offensive mistakes.
- Treat every hit as healing Malenia restores health when her attacks connect, so a blocked strike can still improve her position. Expand the fight plan in Weaknesses and damage before committing to a shield-heavy build. Weaknesses and damage
- Save a response for Waterfowl Dance Do not spend every stamina point attacking during her first phase. Keep enough distance, stamina, or a defensive tool to survive the rapid multi-part attack described in Strategy. Strategy
- Punish recovery, not movement Her attacks cross the arena quickly, but several recovery animations create safer openings than the middle of her strings. Wait for those windows instead of trading hits. Encounter phases
- Prepare for Scarlet Rot The second phase adds rot-bearing attacks and a dangerous opening bloom. Boluses, preserving consumables, or a build that can keep distance reduce the cost of a mistake. Pre-fight checklist
- Use the optional status weaknesses Malenia can be staggered and is vulnerable to Bleed and Frostbite, although status buildup and openings are less reliable if the player attacks carelessly. Compare the options before choosing a loadout. Weaknesses and damage
- Expect a full second phase The phase transition is not a short finishing sequence: it begins another health pool with new attacks. Plan healing and consumable use around the entire encounter rather than celebrating the first stagger. Encounter phases
Overview
Malenia, Blade of Miquella is an optional demigod boss at the end of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, and one of the most demanding encounters in Elden Ring.
Malenia is found beyond the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace, in a secluded arena reached through Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Reaching her requires progressing through the Haligtree and opening the large door to her chamber; the encounter is not part of the route required to finish the main story. Because the area is optional and difficult to reach, players can postpone the fight without preventing the completion of the central ending path.
The fight is distinctive because Malenia regains health whenever one of her attacks connects with the player, including many contacts made against a shield. This healing is separate from her own health bar and can turn passive blocking into a losing exchange. Dodging, spacing, weapon skills, and carefully timed guard counters are therefore more important than simply bringing a large amount of mitigation.
Malenia's first phase emphasizes rapid katana attacks, long advancing strings, delayed kicks, grabs, and Waterfowl Dance. At half health she enters a second phase and gains Scarlet Rot attacks, aerial dives, phantom-assisted sequences, and Scarlet Aeonia. The transition restores her to a new phase health pool, so a successful first phase does not leave her close to defeat in the second.
Defeating Malenia awards a large Rune payout, Remembrance of the Rot Goddess, and Malenia's Great Rune. The remembrance can be exchanged for one of two unique rewards at the Roundtable Hold, while the Great Rune offers a healing mechanic that rewards aggressive play after taking damage. Her arena also provides one of the game's clearest tests of endurance, pattern recognition, and the ability to punish recovery animations rather than attack continuously.

This encounter is optional, follows the Haligtree approach, and does not gate the main ending sequence.
Requirements and preparation
There is no mandatory character level, weapon, quest, or summon requirement, but the encounter is balanced as an endgame challenge.
- RequiredReach Elphael, Brace of the HaligtreeThe boss door is located at the end of the optional Haligtree route, beyond the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace.
- RecommendedA fully upgraded main weaponMalenia's speed and healing make low-upgrade weapons especially inefficient; a highly upgraded weapon shortens the number of openings required.
- RequiredA plan for Waterfowl DanceChoose reliable evasion, distance management, a shield response, or a defensive item before entering rather than improvising after the attack begins.
- RecommendedA way to manage Scarlet RotPreserving Boluses, high robustness, or a strategy that avoids the rot pools helps in phase 2, especially after Scarlet Aeonia.
- RecommendedA reserve of healingThe fight has two phases and rewards patience, so entering with enough Crimson Tears and a clear healing window is more useful than spending every flask on the approach.
- OptionalSpirit Ash or co-op supportBoth options are optional. They can create attack windows, but additional targets do not remove Malenia's healing rule and can make her movement less predictable.
Encounter phasesSpoilers
- 118,473 HP in the base game on a first cycle.
Phase 1: Blade of Miquella
Starts: The fight begins when Malenia is approached in her arena.
Malenia uses fast katana strings, a forward thrust, a kick, a grab, jumping attacks, and Waterfowl Dance. She has no separate Scarlet Rot bloom in this phase, but every successful connection restores her health.
- Waterfowl DanceTell She briefly rises and draws back before launching a rapid sequence of advancing slashes.Answer Create distance before the launch if possible; otherwise use a practiced combination of sprinting away, rolling through later flurries, and a defensive tool for the first burst. Do not panic-roll every direction.
- Long katana stringTell She steps or glides toward the player and chains several horizontal and diagonal cuts.Answer Roll toward or past the final part of the string when spacing allows, then punish the recovery rather than the first swing.
- GrabTell She pauses, extends her arm, and lunges directly toward the player's position.Answer Roll sideways or backward on reaction. A clean grab can remove a large amount of health and gives her the same healing benefit as other contacts.
- KickTell She lifts a leg before driving a close-range kick that can break a guard.Answer Avoid holding a shield in front of the kick; roll away or around it and take the short recovery window.
- Stay close enough to read her attacks but avoid standing directly in front of her after a combo ends.
- Jump attacks and heavy attacks can contribute to stance breaks, but repeated trades are dangerous because her healing can erase the damage.
- When she leaps away, wait for the landing pattern instead of chasing blindly into a returning slash.
- 214,778 HP in the base game on a first cycle.
Phase 2: Goddess of Rot
Starts: Begins after her first health bar is depleted and the transition cutscene finishes.
Malenia gains Scarlet Rot-based attacks, a flower-like Scarlet Aeonia dive, airborne phantom sequences, and more aggressive movement. The opening bloom can be punished only after escaping its impact and rot area.
- Scarlet AeoniaTell She rises high and dives toward the player, creating a large Scarlet Rot bloom on impact.Answer Run or roll away from the landing point, wait for the bloom's dangerous area to subside, then punish her recovery from outside the rot cloud with ranged attacks or a brief melee approach.
- Phantom clone sequenceTell She launches into the air and sends spectral copies forward in a series of thrusts and slashes before the real attack concludes.Answer Keep moving laterally and roll through the individual arrivals rather than stopping to attack the first phantom. Save stamina for the final real lunge.
- Rot-imbued aerial attacksTell Her airborne movement and dives leave less forgiving spaces around the impact points than in phase 1.Answer Prioritize leaving the marked landing zone, then re-enter only after confirming whether she follows with another aerial strike.
- Enhanced close-range stringTell The familiar katana chains remain available and can be followed by phase-2 movement or rot pressure.Answer Use the same delayed punish windows as phase 1, but leave additional space if the sequence ends in an aerial launch.
- The transition is a damage opportunity only after the bloom is safely avoided; rushing into the flower trades health for a small punish.
- Do not heal beside Scarlet Aeonia's lingering area. Move to clean ground first, then use the opening.
- Phase 2 rewards conservative positioning because one failed dodge can both damage the player and restore Malenia's health.
Combat strategySpoilers
- LocationMalenia's arena beyond Haligtree Roots in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree
- HealthPhase 1: 18,473 HP; phase 2: 14,778 HP in the base game on a first cycle
Begin by learning the timing of her basic strings and refuse to attack during the middle of a long sequence. Roll through the final swing when possible, then use one or two attacks before resetting your spacing. Keep Waterfowl Dance in mind at all times; if she begins at close range, a prepared evasive response is more valuable than trying to stagger her out of it. Medium-load rolling is usually easier to control than a slower roll because the encounter demands repeated directional changes. In phase 2, immediately prioritize escaping Scarlet Aeonia and its lingering rot zone. Once the arena is clear, use ranged pressure, status buildup, or short melee punishments during her recovery animations. Summons and co-op partners can create openings, but they also give Malenia more possible targets and do not stop her healing, so support should be used to create controlled damage windows rather than nonstop attacks.
Weaknesses
- Malenia is susceptible to stance pressure and can be staggered by well-timed heavy attacks, charged attacks, jump attacks, and some weapon skills.
- Bleed and Frostbite can be effective status options, particularly when the player can apply them without trading hits.
- Fire damage is generally a practical elemental option, but the weapon's moveset and the player's ability to survive openings matter more than damage type alone.
- She is not weak to reckless aggression: every contact she makes can restore health, so a nominally strong build can lose ground through unsafe trades.
Rewards
- 480,000 Runes
- Remembrance of the Rot Goddess
- Malenia's Great Rune
StrategySpoilers
- 01
Prepare at the final Site of Grace
Rest at Haligtree RootsUse Haligtree Roots as the final checkpoint before the boss door. Refill flasks, adjust the equipped talismans and summons, and make sure the intended weapon is upgraded before crossing the arena entrance.
Location: Haligtree Roots
TipTreat the Site of Grace as the staging point for the entire fight; repeated trips through Elphael are unnecessary once it is active.
- 02
Start the encounter without taking an opening hit
Enter the arena and establish spacingWalk toward Malenia only far enough to start the encounter, then avoid immediately spending stamina on attacks. Her opening movement is easier to read when the player has room to identify whether she is beginning a thrust, a string, or a leap.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipKeep the camera centered on her torso rather than her sword hand so forward movement is easier to see.
- 03
Survive and punish a standard combo
Learn the first close-range stringWhen Malenia advances with ordinary katana cuts, roll through the later part of the sequence instead of attacking the first swing. Her recovery after the chain is one of the safer early opportunities for a single hit or a short weapon skill.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipOne clean hit followed by repositioning is safer than trying to force a full combo.
- 04
Avoid the two close-range punishers
Respond to the kick and grabThe kick can break a guard and the grab can cause severe damage, so do not answer either with a stationary shield hold. Roll away from the kick's close space and roll sideways or backward when she extends her arm for the grab.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipIf the camera becomes cramped, unlock briefly and roll based on her body movement rather than the weapon animation.
Watch outA failed grab dodge both removes health and restores Malenia's health, making repeated reaction errors especially costly.
- 05
Survive Waterfowl Dance
Reserve stamina for Waterfowl DanceWaterfowl Dance begins with a brief lift and forward launch, followed by several rapid groups of slashes. At long range, sprint away from the first burst and roll the later bursts; at close range, use a practiced combination of movement, rolls, or a defensive item rather than mashing attacks.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipDo not empty the stamina bar immediately before she reaches the threshold for this attack.
Watch outTrying to trade through the first flurry is one of the most reliable ways to lose the attempt, because each contact heals her.
- 06
Create a stagger without trading damage
Break her stance when an opening is realHeavy attacks, jump attacks, charged attacks, and suitable weapon skills can pressure her stance, but only use them after a recovery animation or a confirmed whiff. Stance pressure is a way to shorten the fight, not permission to attack through active strings.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipBuild a repeatable punish pattern around one attack after a safe recovery, then increase pressure only when the timing is consistent.
- 07
Deplete the first health bar
Finish phase 1 without exhausting resourcesContinue the single-punish-and-reset rhythm until the first health bar is depleted. Preserve enough healing and defensive resources for the second phase because the transition creates a new health pool rather than simply exposing a nearly defeated target.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipA slow attempt that reaches phase 2 with flasks remaining is better than a fast attempt that arrives empty.
- 08
Survive the phase transition
Escape Scarlet AeoniaAt the start of phase 2, Malenia dives and creates Scarlet Aeonia at the impact point. Move away from the flower and its rot area before attacking; after the bloom's danger has passed, approach only far enough to punish her recovery.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipRanged attacks are especially convenient during the first recovery because they avoid standing in the flower's lingering area.
Watch outEntering the bloom for immediate damage can inflict Scarlet Rot and allow follow-up attacks to connect.
- 09
Survive the phase-2 clone attack
Handle the phantom sequenceDuring the airborne clone attack, spectral copies arrive in a sequence before Malenia's real strike. Keep moving laterally, roll through each threatening arrival, and reserve stamina for the final lunge instead of attacking the first image.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipThe copies are a timing problem, not a target-priority problem; focus on the incoming paths and the final real attack.
- 10
Deal damage while avoiding rot zones
Punish phase-2 recoveriesAfter Scarlet Aeonia, a missed aerial attack, or the end of a confirmed katana string, use a brief melee punish or safe status/ranged pressure. Leave the area again if she begins another airborne move rather than extending the attack.
Location: Malenia's arena
TipClean ground is more valuable than a marginal extra hit because it preserves room for the next dodge.
- 11
Defeat Malenia and claim the aftermath
Complete the second health barRepeat the phase-2 cycle until Malenia falls, prioritizing survival over continuous damage. Once the victory is registered, collect the rewards and activate the Great Rune at a Divine Tower if you want to equip its effect.
Location: Malenia's arena and Roundtable Hold
TipThe Remembrance of the Rot Goddess can be exchanged at Roundtable Hold, so do not consume it without checking both remembrance options.
Watch outThe fight is optional, but consuming the remembrance is an irreversible choice for that playthrough unless duplicated through a suitable mausoleum.
Pre-fight checklist
- Activate Haligtree RootsThis prevents the approach through Elphael from becoming part of every retry.
- Equip a fully upgraded primary weaponMalenia's healing makes low damage particularly punishing because each attempt gives her more chances to recover.
- Choose and rehearse a Waterfowl Dance responseDecide whether the response is distance, directional rolling, blocking with a healing-aware plan, or a defensive consumable.
- Carry Scarlet Rot cures or protectionPreserving Boluses and suitable defensive preparation reduce the consequences of Scarlet Aeonia and phase-2 rot attacks.
- Keep a medium or light roll if comfortableA faster equip load gives more control during long strings and airborne attacks.
- Reserve stamina before uncertain exchangesWaterfowl Dance and the phantom sequence both punish players who spend their entire bar attacking.
- Decide whether to use a Spirit Ash or co-opSupport can create openings but does not prevent Malenia from healing when she hits any target.Optional
- Check the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess planReview the remembrance rewards before consuming or exchanging it so the desired option is not overlooked.Optional
Weaknesses and damageSpoilers
Strengths
- Exceptional mobility lets Malenia close distance during attacks and punish healing attempts.
- Her rapid strings cover both close and mid-range space, so standing just outside melee range is not automatically safe.
- Her health restoration makes blocked contact and careless trades beneficial to her rather than merely ineffective.
- The second phase adds Scarlet Rot zones and airborne attacks that restrict where the player can stand.
Weaknesses
- She can be staggered, allowing heavy, jump, and charged attacks to create meaningful punish windows.
- Bleed and Frostbite are established status options against her and can shorten the encounter when applied during safe openings.
- Her recovery after major attacks, especially Scarlet Aeonia, offers clearer opportunities than her active strings.
- Clean spacing and directional dodging reduce the number of successful contacts she can convert into healing.
Best uses
- A bleed or frost-oriented build is strongest for players who can apply status without chasing her through active attacks.
- Heavy weapons can win through stance pressure, but they require stricter timing and leave less room for recovery after a mistake.
- Ranged attacks are most useful in phase 2 after Scarlet Aeonia, when the rot bloom makes immediate melee punishment dangerous.
- A shield can help against selected attacks, but it should not replace a dodge plan because blocked hits can still restore Malenia's health.
Failure conditionsSpoilers
- The player diesThe attempt ends and Malenia returns to her arena after the player respawns; the fight must be restarted from the checkpoint.
- Waterfowl Dance connects repeatedlyThe multiple slashes can rapidly kill a character and simultaneously restore a large amount of Malenia's health. Entering the attack with no stamina is a common preventable failure.
- The player trades into ordinary stringsEven when the player survives the exchange, every successful contact restores Malenia's health, so repeated trading can erase the apparent progress on her health bar.
- The player remains in Scarlet AeoniaThe phase-2 bloom and its lingering area can inflict Scarlet Rot and leave the player vulnerable to follow-up attacks. Escape first and punish later.
- A summon or co-op partner is relied on as a permanent distractionMalenia can change targets and heal from hits against other participants. Support creates windows but does not remove the encounter's central healing mechanic.
- The Remembrance of the Rot Goddess is consumed without checking the optionsThe remembrance provides a limited playthrough reward choice. Check its available exchanges before using it for Runes.
On failure
Haligtree Roots is the practical retry checkpoint. There is no separate mid-fight checkpoint between phases.
Rewards and dropsSpoilers
- 480,000 RunesThe base-game first-cycle Rune payout. It can be used for levels, upgrades, or purchases and is awarded when the boss is defeated.
- Remembrance of the Rot GoddessA remembrance item that can be exchanged at Roundtable Hold for one of Malenia's unique rewards or consumed for Runes. Check both exchange options before choosing.
- Malenia's Great RuneA Great Rune obtained after victory. Once restored at its associated Divine Tower and equipped, it supports aggressive recovery by allowing attacks after taking damage to restore some lost health.
LoreSpoilers
Malenia is one of the Empyreans and the twin sister of Miquella. She was born with Scarlet Rot, while Miquella pursued ways to overcome the afflictions and curses that defined the lives of those close to him. Their bond is reflected in Malenia's title and in the Haligtree, the sanctuary associated with Miquella's ambitions.
The Redmane conflict remembered as the Battle of Aeonia brought Malenia and General Radahn into a catastrophic stalemate. Malenia released the Scarlet Rot within her, transforming the battlefield and the surrounding region of Caelid. She was carried back to the Haligtree, where she remained in anticipation of Miquella's return.
By the time the Tarnished reaches her, Miquella is absent from the chamber and Malenia continues to identify herself through her relationship to him. Her second phase presents the rot not merely as a status effect but as the power she has been containing and unleashing, giving the fight a direct mechanical expression of her history.
Malenia's Great Rune contrasts with the defensive instincts encouraged by many other encounters. Its effect asks the player to reclaim lost health through counterattacks, making the reward thematically and mechanically connected to Malenia's own insistence on recovering what has been taken from her.
Named connectionsSpoilers
Trivia
- Malenia's health restoration works even when the player blocks many of her attacks, which makes her healing mechanic unusually important for shield users.
- The title Blade of Miquella is used both as a personal declaration and as a concise explanation of her loyalty to her twin brother.
- Her second phase title, Goddess of Rot, turns the Scarlet Rot associated with her origin into the central identity of the latter half of the encounter.
- Malenia's Great Rune reverses the usual retreat-after-damage instinct by rewarding the player for attacking after being hurt.
- The arena is located at the end of the Haligtree route but the boss is optional, so players can complete the principal ending route without defeating her.
